Inverewe Garden & Estate NTS

Inverewe Garden & Estate NTS Inverewe Garden & Estate, Poolewe, Wester Ross, Scottish Highlands One of the most beautiful places in Scotland, this 50-acre garden was created in 1862.
(312)

It is an oasis of exotic plants, bursting with vibrant colour, thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream that flows along the west Scottish coastline. Rhododendrons from the Himalayas, eucalypts from Tasmania, olearia from New Zealand and other species from such far-flung places as Chile and South Africa, all flourish here, in a display that changes with the seasons. As well as the Garden we

have over 2,000 acres which we manage for conservation including the Pinewood Trail, Inverewe Trail and Kernsary Path. At the edge of Loch Ewe is a Wildlife Hide full of interesting facts and interpretation where seals, otters, divers and a rich variety of wildlife can be seen. We welcome well behaved dogs and their responsible owners into the Garden during opening hours. There's also a dog friendly Pinewood Trail (45mins circular walk) offering superb views of Inverewe Estate, Loch Ewe and the Highlands. Garden

We are over the moon to share that both Inverewe Garden and Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve were each awarded five stars under the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions’ new quality award scheme — recognising world-class visitor experiences across the country. 🌟

Martin Hughes, Operations Manager for Inverewe and Corrieshalloch Gorge said:
"None of this would have been possible without our wonderful colleagues and volunteers across both sites. Their passion, hard work, and dedication are what make these places truly world-class."

We are so grateful for the support of the local community, members of the National Trust for Scotland, and all of you who support us throughout the season.

Inverewe and Corrieshalloch: More Than Just Beauty — A Haven for Biodiversity

This summer, our gardens and gorge have been buzzing with hidden life as moth expert Barry Blake, Inverewe’s Estate Ranger Ben Syrett-Judd, and volunteers uncovered a dazzling world that only wakes up after sunset. From first-ever species records to rare visitors expanding their range, these landscapes are proving to be vital havens for biodiversity. 🌙✨

A Garden Jewel - Lapageria Rosea 💎

We generally don't think of November as a time to look for and appreciate flowering plants, but here in our milder coastal climate, we find wonderful specimens such as the Chilean bell flower, an evergreen vine that produces flowers that are waxy coral pink, subtly spotted with white.

Our Lapageria rosea ‘Nash Court’ was received from Bodnant Garden in 1968 and can be found in the west-end corner of the Walled Garden, where it enjoys a shaded and sheltered position.

The natural range of Lapageria rosea is confined to Chile, where it grows in the south, favouring humid forest margins, and reaching up to 10m into the canopy. Interestingly, the vines twine counter-clockwise in the Southern hemisphere and clockwise when grown in the Northern hemisphere. It has legal protection in Chile owing to over-collection (for the fruit) and forest clearance.

Inverewe’s Atlantic rainforest environment very much mimics the coastal forests, where it’s associated with a tree flora that includes Gevuina avellana, Laurelia sempervirens, Lomatia, Luma apiculata, Nothofagus obliqua, and Rhaphithamnus spinosus, all of which are also represented in our garden, here on the shores of Loch Ewe.

We are looking to introduce more cultivated varieties of these beautiful vines to the Woodland Garden at Inverewe in the near future. 💛
