С.К.О.Б. in Ukrainian scouting means Strong, Noble, Careful and Alert—and "скоб" (skob) is also an old word for a goshawk.

Last night we were privileged to welcome Roman: a Ukrainian scout leader and active drone team officer, currently serving on the front line. He is in the UK briefly to see his wife and family, who moved here at the start of the war.

His session with our Explorers was exactly as impactful as you might expect.

When your everyday reality is life-and-death conflict, it has a way of stripping out small talk and trivia. Roman's presentation cut right to the chase: this world will soon belong to you, value what you have, understand that it is fragile, and consider what your privilege might ask of you.

CASINO NIGHT Xmas party—presaging our prospective Explorer Unit for 14-17s. Shh, let's not count the chickens before they hatch, but we are hopeful for this some time in the new year!

SUMMER CAMP was awesome! Tired after a week at Biblins on the Welsh border, this photo is the end of our The Hobbit incident hike... note the swords, ring of power and gold pieces. I believe this team did in fact manage to slay Smaug! Thank you so much to all the team that made this happen.

Our next great DRAMA PROJECT—our weekend showcase, where every play was scout-written, scout-direct, show-acted, and with the entire tech and stagemanagement scout-run. (As adults we just sat in the audience!) It was amazing and a different experience to Animal Farm last year, and we are so pleased to have been able to help these guys grow their skills and experience. Staged in the round, and without the comfort of the prompt screens and adult micromanagment of Animal Farm, this was a bare knuckle ride for the scouts, some having real nerves on the get-in when they saw the reality of theatre-in-the-round and how exposed you are as an actor. It went perfectly, another amazing show and such credit to our young people!

ANIMAL FARM—OMG we really did it! We put on a full length musical, as a scout group. Experience unlocked!! These young people were incredible, working 24 hours in a workshop format and putting on a show that exceeded typical secondary school standards. Scouts don't do this... but they kind of used to. 100 years ago, Gang Show was a big deal to get scouts working together on a mission and showing the public what we could do. We wanted to shake off some of that baggage, package up an experience that fitted with the lives of modern scouts, an give them something they would remember and value, and it worked. We also got stunned reviews. Looking forward to our next project, and so much credit to the young people who took this challenge and smashed it!

It's been a difficult day for Girlguiding, with them being forced by legal advice to exclude some of the girls who needed them the most to feel accepted and included. Our hearts go out to those affected. Our hands in scouting are not so tied and we promise to welcome all children from 4-24, regardless of how they identify. Our LGBTQ+ members tell us that they feel welcomed and supported, and we are incredibly proud of that.

WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE is a big deal. Of the 40,000 scouts due to meet in Gdansk in 2027, just 36 are drawn from the 150 scout groups in Cambridgeshire. We are thrilled to say that after a high pressure selection weekend, THREE of our scouts were chosen to represent the county! We are incredibly proud of Evie, Lydia and Aiyana.

Jamboree has run every four years since 1920 (with gaps for war and COVID), part of Baden-Powell’s original hope to make the world a little better through youth training and international understanding.

Between now and 2027, Evie, Lydia and Aiyana won’t just be counting down the days. They’ll be taking part in training camps, getting to know their cohort, and developing the skills and resilience they will need. Jamboree is expensive and making it work is character-building! The fund-raising they do is for their own ticket and expenses, but also to enable scouts from places like Africa to attend as equals, often as their first travel outside of their country. They will have an amazing time, but also bring knowledge and love back to our own little operation back in Fulbourn. The experiences and bonds that it creates are real, for our scouts and much further afield.

You will see these guys (with or without their slightly stunned and daunted parents) turning up at village events and online over the next year or so, selling awesome things, running social things, doing sponsored fund-raising. Please take a moment to talk to them (they will love to share their passion for this), spend generously, and share their ads and notices—including this link! They really are worth supporting. https://57th.uk

I'm Greg, lead volunteer at 57th Scouts. And this post is not about remembrance. When I was a kid, growing up in the 80s, it was difficult to be a scout at school. We've been through phases, but it was uncool late 80s, early 90s. Is it something that people understand, or that people will respect? I wanted to post to say that I am incredibly proud of our scouts who chose to wear their scout uniform at school - both to assert their respect for those who fell in conflict, but also such a public statement of their own identity, proud of who they are and confident in their own skins. In 2025, it's a good time to be a scout but maybe not an easy time, with limited spaces and so many life pressures. It's easy to withdraw to an online life. The world feels dangerous and we hide indoors. We live in strange political and cultural times where children can so easily be drawn in by racism and xenophobia, or trapped in other echo chambers online. We do our best to fix this in our little corner of the world. Thank you all for your support and thank you to BVC too for including scouts in their act of remembrance.

We don't make our members do this. Those that come do so because it's meaningful to them. We come together on the anniversary of armistice in memory of those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you so much for taking the time Pippa! A quick chat visit would have been so easy, but settling in for the evening to listen to all the scouts and cub's views and campaigns was really meaningful and left them with a buzz - and just maybe a future interest in politics. Scouting is politically neutral of course, but I can confidently say that we are all behind you in your efforts to save the planet at COP 30... an issue that is absolutely critical to our young people and all future generations.

SIX of our scouts are waiting by the phone with baited breath this week to see if they have places for the 2027 World Scout Jamboree in Poland. There were 100 applicants for 36 places in Cambridgeshire, and more scouts applied from Fulbourn than anywhere else in the county - a testament to their experience and ambition. We wait anxiously!
