FROM THE YUKON TO FROSTERLEY
Thursday 7th May
All the way from the Yukon, Canada, Diyet and the Love Soldiers invite you to a soundscape of rhythm, melody and storytelling, deeply rooted in Diyet’s Indigenous world view and northern Life. The evening comes to the venue as part of the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme spring season.
Born in a tent, raised in a cabin on the shores of a glacial lake in the Kluane region of Canada's Yukon Territory, Diyet embodies her Southern Tutchone, Japanese, Tlingit and Scottish roots with a musical presence that is equally diverse and unique. Connected by land, transformed by language, her songs are natural, genuine and a reminder to listen to the world around us.
Diyet sings in both English and her traditional language, Southern Tutchone, and plays bass. Backed by Love Soldiers, husband and collaborator, Robert van Lieshout acoustic guitar, drums & percussion) and Bob Hamilton (electric guitar, pedal steel & mandolin), this multi-instrumental trio has a sound that can fill a big stage or capture an intimate room.
During the last decade Diyet has performed at major folk, jazz, world and multi-disciplinary festivals and theatres in Canada, toured in the UK, Europe, US and Circumpolar North. Diyet & The Love Soldiers recently performed at English Folk Expo in Manchester, Osaka Expo 2025 in Japan, and Mundial Montreal. Diyet has released four albums, with her most recent one released in September 2025, Seeds of Dreaming.
Kate Lynch, Artistic Director of Highlights said “Diyet and her band stunned audiences with their music and storytelling back in 2019, and we’re delighted to be able to bring them back this season – our partnership with Canadian artists is such a valuable part of our programme - to be able to listen to stories so far from our own in our village hall venues is a privilege and Diyet’s performance really sums that up”
