Our Story
Singing Social is an intergenerational music group offering an opportunity for pre-schoolers to connect with our elderly community over a shared love of music.
Music is a part of our culture that has always been learned by watching peers and elders. In our music making workshops we are all musicians. We celebrate the aspect of music that is to do with sharing a connection. We do this by sharing traditional songs such as nursery rhymes that will bridge the years between us. We focus on songs that are old, sometimes hundreds of years old. We teach these old songs to our children and in doing so we preserve them and engage in an ancient activity, an interpretation of a song sung a thousand times. In some instances we find that a participant who rarely speaks and is living with severe dementia, is able to recall the verses of a nursery rhyme that we ourselves don’t know. In this situation, that person is empowered by music. They are respected and, in the eyes of the children, they are no different to any other adult in the room.
Too often we teach our children that signing is a competition. In our workshops we teach them, from as early as 6 months, that music is a right, a therapy, a language, and most importantly a joy.
With local music educators Rosanna Schura and Willow Harwood.
