🎧 Experience Heal Somerset in a whole new way.

We’re delighted to launch our brand-new Heal Somerset audio trail - an immersive journey of sound, storytelling and gentle prompts to look, listen and notice.

From Heal’s agricultural past to the many possible futures taking shape here, discover returning wildlife, the hidden processes behind the land’s recovery and imagine the woodland, wetlands and grasslands that may one day flourish. 🌿

You might even hear from some of Heal’s wildest residents… 🐦🦫

🎧 Explore remotely via our Visit Virtually webpage (link below 🔗👇), or follow the trail on site using the free Echoes app, with each section starting automatically as you explore.

Created by University of Bristol MSc students Bea Henderson and Sam Rushton, this is a new way to experience the story of a landscape finding its way back to life.

Who have we seen at Heal Somerset recently? Playful beaver kits, a magnificent cormorant, the return of the hungry heron (with an audience), a handsome badger, more exploring beaver kits, a fabulous pheasant and some curious otters.

🍂 Celebrate the Autumn equinox at Heal Somerset 🍂

As day and night meet in perfect balance, join botanical artist and RHS Chelsea Gold medallist Amanda Randell Cox for a morning of slowing down, noticing and celebrating the quieter beauty of the changing season. A chance to connect with nature and get creative. 🌾

We’ll begin with tea, coffee and pastries before heading out on a guided walk through Heal Somerset, looking closely at the textures, seed heads and overlooked details of the rewilding landscape.

Back at the Community Nature Cabin, you’ll turn inspiration into creativity - working together to create an autumn table meadow before making your own delicate wire insect to take home. We’ll finish with a delicious seasonal vegetarian brunch, surrounded by the botanical creations made during the morning.

In our Heal Somerset State of Nature 2026 report we recorded 94 bird species seen at the site, of which one of the newest arrivals was the elusive water rail. 🐦💚

Known for keeping out of sight in dense wetland vegetation, water rails are far more often heard than seen. Capturing this footage is therefore a real treat – and an encouraging sign that the developing wetlands at Heal Somerset are creating the kind of habitat these secretive birds need.

While the appearance of a single species doesn't prove that rewilding is succeeding, every new arrival adds another piece to the picture. Through ongoing surveys and monitoring, we're building the evidence to show how nature-led recovery can help wildlife return. 🌿

Who knew beavers created lawns?!

We've learnt a lot by watching the kits. They forage close to the water's edge, using their sharp teeth to 'mow' the grassy banks, creating open spaces where sunlight can filter down to the ground and hopefully encouraging different species to grow.

Also (and most importantly) - they are just so cute to watch in action!

Meet Ticket, one of our wild-living Tamworth pigs. 🐷

While he's having a well-earned nap to escape the heat, he'll also spend his days rootling through the ground, creating habitat and helping nature recovery in ways wild boar once did. Ticket and his brother Tailor will live out the rest of their lives peacefully at Heal Somerset 💚

If we get enough likes we'll post an exclusive close-up of his snoring snoot 😆🐽

It doesn't have to be this way.

When we give nature the chance... It starts solving problems we struggle to fix ourselves.

Our beavers are slowing water, creating wetlands and keeping parts of Heal Somerset beautifully green through the dry spell. 🦫💧🌿

‼️Species increase at Heal Somerset ‼️

We reported in our Heal Somerset State of Nature 2026 report that recorded butterfly species had grown from 11 in 2023 to 24 by the end of 2025. We are delighted to report that this list has since grown further, with the current recorded species count now at 26! 🦋

The latest additions include the Brown Argus (pictured) and Clouded Yellow, which we were excited to spot for the first time in July. While this increase in species richness does not by itself prove that our rewilding is having a positive impact, it certainly helps to create a joyful and motivating atmosphere to work in. 💚

We will continue to conduct regular surveys at Heal Somerset, contributing to the national database with the aim of proving the effectiveness of nature-led recovery. 💪

When we say Heal Somerset is teeming with life... THIS is what we mean!

Every time we step outside we are met with the buzz and hum of insects, grasses erupting with small, flying creatures, widespread wings sunbathing in the heat. It is a joy to witness - and a privilege we don't take lightly!

Today is World Nature Conservation Day, born of the premise that to have a healthy society and quality of life, we need to have a healthy environment. This is what Heal Rewilding is all about - giving nature space to recover by protecting it forever. We are taking direct action to tackle the climate and ecological crises and reconnect people with nature.
