📽️ Save the date! Derek vs Derek is coming to the Merlin Theatre in Frome on Wednesday 27 January.

Our friend Derek Gow stars alongside Derek Banbury in this new documentary from award-winning director James Dawson, which follows the two neighbouring Devon farmers who share a name but take very different approaches to the land.

In equal parts hilarious and moving, the film shines a light on the vital debate surrounding the future of rural Britain and encourages conversation around how farming and nature restoration might work together.

In October’s issue of Heal Highs, we make a strong case for reviewing the funding for naturally regenerated trees. Ours came through this year’s drought with hardly any losses 🌳 but we hear planted saplings have struggled. Other highlights include:

Why isn't rewilding taken more seriously?

The UK's biggest nature report barely mentioned it - despite the huge role nature-led recovery can play in rebuilding the country's wildlife and habitats.

🥁 So we made our own: the Heal Somerset State of Nature report, the first ever to focus solely on rewilding.

By now, who hasn't heard about the pollinators in trouble? That bees in particular need saving? 🐝 Hats off to the organisations who've campaigned so brilliantly on bees and to everyone now planting native wildflowers.

But here's the thing: bees are not the only pollinators. Moths - often overlooked because they work the night shift - pollinate just as diligently, along with butterflies, beetles and hoverflies. If we only picture bees and wildflowers, we're only seeing one strand of a much bigger web.

What about plants that feed caterpillars 🐛, not just adult insects? The beloved oxeye daisy supports just two macro moth caterpillar species, while the unglamourous prostrate knotweed supports a whopping 90! 🌿

Dead wood, tussocky grass, ponds and wetlands, trees and "weeds". We must keep helping bees, but we must also widen the lens to the full array of invertebrates, as well as birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and fungi.

If you're thinking about maximising biodiversity, think beyond pollinators and wildflowers 💚💜

🍂 Celebrate the Autumn equinox at Heal Somerset 🍂

As day and night meet in perfect balance, join botanical artist and RHS Chelsea Gold medallist Amanda Randell Cox for a morning of slowing down, noticing and celebrating the quieter beauty of the changing season. A chance to connect with nature and get creative. 🌾

We’ll begin with tea, coffee and pastries before heading out on a guided walk through Heal Somerset, looking closely at the textures, seed heads and overlooked details of the rewilding landscape.

Back at the Community Nature Cabin, you’ll turn inspiration into creativity - working together to create an autumn table meadow before making your own delicate wire insect to take home. We’ll finish with a delicious seasonal vegetarian brunch, surrounded by the botanical creations made during the morning.
