What happens when we put rewilding at the heart of the nature recovery conversation? πŸ’š

Our brand new Heal Somerset State of Nature report explores this, as featured in yesterday's The Guardian article https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jun/01/nature-birds-bats-butterflies-rebound-heal-rewilding-somerset-farm.

The national State of Nature report sets out the scale of nature's decline but rewilding is only briefly mentioned - despite the rapid growth of projects across the UK and the early signs of ecological recovery they're starting to show.

Our new 72-page illustrated report is the first ever State of Nature report to focus solely on nature-led recovery. It uses robust data to contribute to the growing national evidence base and seeks to demonstrate how rewilding can sit alongside more traditional conservation approaches within national discussions about nature recovery.

From ecosystems under pressure to landscapes beginning to recover, our report shares a different lens. One where nature is given the chance to lead.

There's nothing plain about this so-called 'plain pollen-moth'! One of our talented volunteers Jen captured this beauty at Heal Somerset recently, and the team has been marvelling at the flamboyant bronze sparkle of the moth's wings and its furry crown.

Plain pollen-moths (Micropterix calthella) prefer damp habitat, notably woodland, marshes and meadow. You may be able to see them on buttercups, but the one pictured is resting on a cuckoo flower - another species we're delighted to see spreading out into the fields at Heal Somerset.

Moths are excellent pollinators - even these tiny micro-moths - and are a crucial part of a healthy ecosystem.

The Heal team took a trip to the wonderful Penpont last week, to see their incredible setup and learn all about eco-cultural mapping. πŸ—ΊοΈ

In just over a day we took part in creative exercises designed to expand our usual way of thinking, marvelled at beautifully illustrated windows into the past, present and future of Penpont, enjoyed peaceful forest camping amid the bluebells and experienced a magical dawn chorus. πŸ¦β›Ί

We left feeling rejuvenated and inspired - all we can say now is watch this space! 🌞

Thank you to the fantastic team at Penpont for making us feel so welcome and sharing your vast knowledge and expertise with us πŸ™

These are not just flies. These are St Mark's flies... πŸ˜„

Black, shiny and sluggish on the ground, these easily misidentified creatures are fantastic pollinators and are commonly found around hedgerows, fields, wetlands and the edges of woodland. So-called because they tend to appear in large numbers towards the end of April (St Mark's Day is on 25 April), these shortlived hawthorn and fruit tree pollinators will start to disappear towards the end of May.

This might look like a pest swarm but we at Heal are happy to have hosted it!

🌿 Ever wondered what rewilding really looks like on the ground?

Join us for a unique one-day experience with 'the rewilding guy', Alastair Driver - exploring not one, but two rewilding sites at different stages of recovery.

Spend the morning at Heal Somerset, just over three years into its journey, before heading to nearby Cannwood, where nature is already thriving.

Expect a relaxed walk-and-talk, honest conversations and decades of real-world insight into the challenges (and joys) of rewilding.

100 years of Sir David Attenborough 🌍

A lifetime spent championing the beauty of our natural world and the urgency of protecting it.
His work has shown us that nature isn’t separate from us, it’s vital to our wellbeing, climate stability and our future. As we face biodiversity loss on an unprecedented scale, nature recovery isn’t optional - it’s essential.

Today, we celebrate not only a century with an extraordinary naturalist but also the inspiration he has given us here at Heal to take action for nature for generations to come.

Yes that's right - our award-winning nature recovery film is coming to London! πŸ’šπŸŽ‰

Learn about Heal's journey of transforming land from previous intensive agricultural use into a rewilding site, with all the excitement and challenges we encountered as we began. It's a beautifully shot film from the talented Planet House Productions and Hayley Smith, with gorgeous scenes of our little pocket of Somerset, an inspiring story and of course, plenty of wildlife.

Come and join us on the evening of Wednesday 1 July for the film screening and a panel discussion. We look forward to seeing you there!
