We have got a busy week coming up!
Two fund raising events.......

On Tuesday evening (21st April) we are holding a fun quiz night at Totland Village Hall from 7.00 pm and then on Saturday 25th, it's our turn to set up and organise Colwell Common for the regular Saturday morning Car Boot Sale!

Please try to support our events and help raise funds for our vital work in keeping the local archives safe for future generations.

We would be very pleased to see you!

So, what do you know about our Island ?

Try out your knowledge at our next Quiz night which is fast approaching. We do hope you have got that evening marked in your diary! Tuesday 21st April 7.00pm.

The questions will be based on your knowledge of the Isle of Wight with a set of picture quiz questions too.
But, it's only for fun so you don't have to take it too seriously. It should be an entertaining evening and you might make some new friends!

Don't forget it takes place in a different venue to the others we have held.
This time it's at the Totland Village Hall (formerly the Church Hall) The Broadway Totland. Newly refurbished it looks very smart!
Just £2 per person with teams of up to 6.

Now here's an interesting photo from 11th August 1978. You can see it in the main window of the Heritage Centre.
It was taken in front of Thornton's (now The Piano).
The group of people (namely Gordon and Peter Harrison, Vera Woodhead, Joan Gould and Mr & Mrs Whitewood) are looking up at the
Transatlantic gas balloon Double Eagle 11 in its attempt to cross the Atlantic.

Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman took off in it from Presque Isle, Maine.

The successful crossing took 137 hours 6 minutes and covered 5,021 kilometres(3,120 miles) landing in a wheat field near Miserey France.

This was the first successful transatlantic crossing by a manned balloon.

Here are two more interesting images from our current SHOP display. See them in the main window at the Heritage Centre.
Biddlecombe's hair salon in Tennyson Road Freshwater (now a Chinese takeaway). Note the DL car registration on the car parked outside.
The other is of Totland Supply Stores, The Broadway Totland (part is now the post Office) next door is Totties.
