Christmas Message
David Milne, Chairman, Scottish White Fish Producers’ Association
Dear Members,
As we approach the festive season, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and to look ahead to what the future holds for Scotland’s catching sector. The work you all undertake is nothing short of remarkable. Operating in some of the harshest conditions imaginable, your dedication and resilience ensure our industry not only survives but thrives. It is a difficult industry, but one that brings immense pride and reward to those within it.
Many of us have enjoyed a successful year in 2025, marked by admirable resilience and noteworthy achievements across the sector. However, as we look ahead to 2026, we are mindful of some emerging challenges, particularly the anticipated reduction in cod opportunities. Despite this, our commitment to sustainability remains unwavering, as demonstrated by our proactive efforts, such as introducing new closures to safeguard spawning cod. These initiatives are vital for protecting vulnerable stocks and show our determination to adapt and secure the long-term health of our fisheries.
Despite these achievements, further challenges persist. The expansion of offshore renewables, the laying of new cables, and the designation of Marine Protected Areas all contribute to what is now referred to as the ‘spatial squeeze.’ The pressure on our fishing grounds is real and growing. However, it is precisely in times like these that our unity and determination matter most. We must continue to work together to defend our most productive areas of the sea, ensuring the livelihoods of our members are protected and that our industry remains at the heart of Scotland’s coastal communities.
Looking ahead, collaboration with government on new fisheries management plans and future catching policies offers both challenge and opportunity. If we get these policies right, we can secure a healthy, productive, and sustainable catching sector for generations to come. Your expertise and input are crucial as these plans take shape. Our voice must be heard in shaping policies that reflect the realities of our sector and protect its future.
Above all, I want to highlight how efficiently our sector delivers top-quality seafood to the public. By working together, we’ve adopted innovative practices and focused on sustainability, making Scottish seafood both accessible and valued nationwide. These strengths will be key as we tackle future challenges.
On behalf of the Scottish White Fish Producers’ Association, I wish you and your families a peaceful Christmas and a healthy, prosperous New Year. Let us look forward with optimism, confident in our ability to overcome whatever lies ahead.
