The county wide “No Mow May” project aims to help our insects thrive.
If you see rather untidy areas of public grass in Fram this month, just think of the benefit to insects.

BUGS MATTER surveys reveal that the number of flying insects have fallen by a staggering 78% since 2004. These losses have a huge impact on biodiversity and also threaten food production through reduced crop pollination.

The abundance of flying insects are sampled by citizen scientists who record the number of splats found on charts attached to their car number plates - simple but effective!
Scan the QR code to see how these surveys work.

Greener Fram is planning to start similar citizen science surveys in various green parts of the town as part of our new Wild About Fram? project. We hope you will join in!

Our Splash of Colour project has got off to a good start this year. Our team has been busy increasing the size of each planting strip and have sown wildflower seeds. You can see them on grass verges around Framlingham. Last year germination was severely hampered by drought, but so far there has been sufficient rain.

We are looking forward to some lovely colourful verges, and especially a hum of insects. After all, this is what it’s all about!

Greener Fram has also supported a tree planting group in Castle Brooks - only six fruit trees so far, but this is the beginning of a small copse of fruit and native trees on a little used part of the green. Successful flowering and green shoots on all trees.

PEOPLE'S EMERGENCY BRIEFING - FILM AND DISCUSSION
Fram Climate Day: Saturday 30th May from 2.15pm – 4.30pm in Castle Community Rooms (doors open 2pm)

See a trailer for the film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wIJBPu24FE

This is a screening of a powerful new film, with leading UK scientists, explaining the the latest evidence on the climate & nature crisis – what it means for food, health, weather and the cost of living and why it matters.
🌧️ Extreme weather 🍞 Food security ❤️Health £Cost of living

The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing (NEB) in Westminster (featured by ITV, Channel 4 and The Times) with appearances from Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden and a range of experts, including those with power and influence across society.

The NEB exists to help create a societal tipping point towards the action now required. You can help make it happen
After the film there will be a short open discussion about what it means for our community and what we can do locally.

Greener Fram is inviting our local MP, Councillors and leaders of Framlingham organisations. We are optimistic that they will join with constituents for this important discussion about our future.
(the film is only being shown at in-person screenings and is not available online)

Everyone is welcome, seats are free but limited, so please book in advance at: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/greenerfram/2141527

At Greener Fram we think it is important to create a positive approach in Framlingham towards climate issues, given that our community is now directly experiencing the growing environmental crisis.
We feel a collective celebration of all our efforts to reduce our carbon footprints is needed to help people see that they are not alone in this change towards living more sustainably in Framlingham.

All Framlingham business, retail and community organisations can now complete the survey which will help us to promote their sustainable activities.

We are hoping for one response from each organisation. This will be followed by a residents survey later in May.

As well as publishing the results, we will be holding a celebratory event in the Autumn, handing out “I ❤️ Low CO2” badges, signs, leaflets & posters so that everyone can see we are on the way to reducing our carbon footprints.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT!
Our special Waste Recycling drop-in event on Saturday 14th March at 2pm – 4pm coincides with the Big Plastic Count week

Having guilty thoughts about throwing away so much plastic? How many times do you hold a piece of packaging and can’t think how to bin it?

We have all seen pictures of huge plastic waste mountains, and know that recycling and reducing our use of plastic is an important part of the solution to the environmental crisis. The roll out of new recycling bins seems a good time to stop “wish-cycling” and get wise, brushing up on our “3R” recycling knowledge: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Come to our event at the Unitarian Meeting House in Framlingham to catch up on the new bins about to be rolled out in Fram.

The Drop-In event will include table top displays, activities and one-to-one advice:
* East Suffolk Council – new recycling bins questions and answers
* WI and Cupboard Love displays of biodegradable products and sustainable solutions which are better for the planet (use your buying power to reduce what you bin)
* Know the numbers and symbols on all our products?
* Activities such as: “is this recyclable?” and “10 things to make using plastic milk bottles”
* Recycled natural wool crafts
* Offers: “No Planet B” decorations to the first 10 visitors
* Greener Fram Larder will be handing out food “too good to waste”

It’s also time to take part in the national “Big Plastic Count”
This survey provides up-to-date evidence for government policy change – aiming for a fairer future that’s free from the impacts of the plastics crisis.

The event is free, with a small donation for refreshments. All Welcome!

We promoted The Big Plastic Count in March:

Count your plastic for one week from 9 to 15 March.
48,269 people signed up to take part from across the country. Thousands of people from households, schools and communities took part in the UK’s biggest people-powered investigation into household plastic waste.

Results will be published soon.

By taking part in The Big Plastic Count, you’ll help gather important evidence to show the true scale of the crisis – and to tell the government we need them to produce less plastic.
They say they are serious about tackling plastic waste – this is our chance to put their promise to the test.

In February we asked:
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN GREENER ENERGY?
Are you finding it hard to get the information you need on how to use more renewable energy, what the options are and how much it might cost?

Navigating renewable and green energy ourselves, we understand how using less CO2 affects our lives, the different options to consider, and the support available.

Come to our special drop-in Green Energy event at the Unitarian Meeting House in Framlingham on Saturday 14th February.
It will include 15 minute talks by Deben Climate Centre, and one to one advice:
2.10pm – Local community energy generation
2.45pm – Demystifying renewable technology
3.15pm – Cost effective green home improvements
PLUS: a children’s craft activity to make a spinning wind vane!

On 22nd November we held a talk on Wildlife Garden Ponds by Transition Woodbridge, and we handed out free Bee Hotels.

This was the program:
2pm – Ponds are amazing for increasing the biodiversity in your garden. Plants, amphibians and insects will visit, and some will even make it their home. Transition Woodbridge will talk us through all you need to know on how to create a wonderful garden pond habitat.

3pm – Free bee hotels - made by pupils at Thomas Mills High School. Any donations will be much appreciated and will go towards all Greener Fram’s activities.

All are welcome to our events – it’s free, with just a small donation towards any refreshments.

Think globally but act locally 🌍
Those of us in the Framlingham area are lucky to live in a beautiful part of the country, but we also live in a rapidly changing world that impacts our way of life. We are now directly experiencing the effects of climate change in our weather, the seasons, pollution and loss of biodiversity in Framlingham, and many are concerned on what best action they can take.

By thinking globally and acting locally, Greener Fram aims to create a sustainable community which continues to be a great place to live, work and play.

We are concerned about all aspects of climate change and are working on projects which address:

🦋 Environment & Biodiversity
🏡 Emissions Reduction & Resilience

Our Greener Fram Projects
Over the next few posts we'll share the details of our 6 main community-driven projects, aimed at increasing the biodiversity of the Framlingham area, reducing residents' energy use and emissions, and helping distribute free food for Fram residents.

“Our Climate is changing - and we can too!”
🫂 If we wait for the Government it will be too late,
if we act as individuals it will be too little,
but if we act as communities it might be just enough, just in time.
