🎶 Strumming Up Community: The Forres Ukulele Project
In the heart of Moray, a joyful musical movement is flourishing—one ukulele at a time. Spearheaded by Findhorn Ukulele Festival coordinator and community music champion Ken Walker, the Forres Ukulele Project is redefining how older adults experience creativity, connection, and collective joy.
A New Soundtrack for Wellbeing
Thanks to support from the Newbold Legacy Trust and the Auchernack Trust, the project has been running free ukulele lessons at Auchernack House, tailored specifically for older residents of Forres. The inaugural 12-week course filled all 30 places within days, underscoring a deep local hunger for inclusive, uplifting activities.
Participants explore basic chords, strumming techniques, and singalong classics like Bring Me Sunshine and Puff the Magic Dragon. With downloadable booklets and group-friendly projected presentations, the sessions focus on fun, confidence, and camaraderie—not technical perfection.
From First Chord to First Concert
Learning quickly turns to performing. “Graduates” of the course will be taking to the stage at the Forres Town Hall Celebration Concert, sharing their music with the wider community. This performance, supported by players from the Forres & Findhorn Ukulele Group, will showcase the joy, progress, and community spirit that the project inspires.
A Legacy in the Making
More than a music class, the Forres Ukulele Project is a legacy initiative—building on the success of the Findhorn Ukulele Festival and championing music as a tool for wellbeing, resilience, and social inclusion.
Looking Ahead
With strong community momentum, the project is set to grow. Plans include additional classes, outreach to care homes, and deeper integration with local arts programming. Donations help keep the sessions free and accessible, covering venue hire and materials.
