Redwings Mountains, Forfar

Redwings Mountains, Forfar Redwings Mountains, which was part of Redwings Horse Sanctuary, is now closed. This page remains open as an archive and updates on it may only be occasional.

Our purpose is to provide a haven for horses, ponies and donkeys. Many of the animals have been rescued from cruelty or neglect or ignorance. We provide food, shelter, medical treatment and loving care. The Sanctuary relies solely on public donations and receives no government funding. Donations are an essential life line and we are extremely grateful to the public for their continued help and support.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the closure of Redwings Mountains following a period of staff consultation. The centre is closed to visitors with immediate effect.

https://www.redwings.org.uk/news-and-features/redwings-announces-closure-two-visitor-centres-in-scotland-and-warwickshire

We are so sorry to share that Redwings Oxhill in Warwickshire has also been closed resulting in 33 staff members being made redundant across the two sites, including 12 at Mountains. All staff have been offered wellbeing support and help to find alternative employment wherever possible. We would like to thank them most sincerely for all their hard work and dedication and wish them every success in the future.

All the resident horses and donkeys will be relocated to our Norfolk sites, and this includes our Adoption Stars. Anyone who sponsors a horse or donkey at Mountains will receive further information about this in due course, and we are so sorry for any disappointment this may cause.

Every horse affected has a new home ready and waiting for them at our Norfolk sanctuary sites. Neither of these centres took in rescue cases directly, and so the closure does not affect Redwings’ ability to rescue horses from anywhere in the country, as we have always done. We will continue to help horses in need, wherever and whenever we can. However, these closures do save vital and significant operating costs long-term, allowing us to secure the future of the 1000+ horses in our sanctuary care who rely on us every day.

Businesses and charities across the country are struggling severely – Redwings is certainly not alone. Needing to use our reserves (our savings) to cover the gap between our income (what we can raise) and our expenditure (what we need to spend) with costs continuing to rise is simply not sustainable. We have been in a period of financial review for nearly two years, including seeking specialist external advice, and although we always hoped it would not be necessary to make such changes, with the economic climate as it is, our Board of Trustees concluded that there was no viable alternative other than to proceed in the way proposed.

Although these closures will make a difference in terms of our day to day running costs, we continue to need your support so anything you can give at this time would be greatly appreciated. You can read more information over on our website.

Thank you so much everyone for your understanding and support as always. We have been overwhelmed by your kind messages, suggestions and donations, and we are so very grateful. We're incredibly sorry to bring you such sad news.

We've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support shown to us this week ♥️ Thank you so much ♥️

On Monday we shared the very difficult news that we are currently in a staff consultation over the potential closure of two of our centres, one of which is Redwings Mountains.

https://www.redwings.org.uk/news-and-features/redwings-announce-consultation-impacting-two-visitor-centres

Lots of you have left us such supportive comments and several of our friends in the equestrian world including SPILLERS and HarryHall.com have reached out to see how they can help. We are so incredibly grateful.

We want to reassure everyone that any potential horse movements would only take place if the proposals do go through and only once the process is at an end. For now we need to allow the staff time to discuss their ideas and thoughts in private and we will update you when we can. All the horses, including Adoption Stars and your favourite personalities will be looked after and moved to the best site possible for them based on their healthcare needs and friendships, and we will of course update you all as soon as we know more.

You can read more information through the link higher up in this post. Our priority as always is the horses and our staff and the sites under consultation are currently closed to visitors while the process takes place and that will take at least a month to conclude.

Thank you so much again everyone for your kindness at this very challenging time. ♥️

Hi , we are writing with some news that is going to be very difficult to hear.

We are very sad to let you know that we are currently in consultation over the potential closure of two of our centres, one of which is Redwings Mountains.

https://www.redwings.org.uk/news-and-features/redwings-announce-consultation-impacting-two-visitor-centres

You have been and continue to be incredibly generous, but with rising costs beyond our control, it is essential that we do everything we can to ensure that we are using your donations most effectively and are investing in activities which will have the greatest impact for the horses in our care and the welfare of those beyond our paddock fences.

We are now in our fourth year of needing to spend some of our financial reserves to balance the budget and continue to provide excellent care for our horses, but it is simply not sustainable to do so any longer. We need to immediately reduce our operating costs and Redwings Mountains and Redwings Oxhill have been selected as they are unfortunately the most expensive for us to run.

Both centres will be closed to visitors while the consultation takes place out of respect for the 39 staff who could potentially be affected by the proposals and while we know this will cause disappointment, we thank you for your understanding at this difficult time.

If you adopt a horse at Mountains – thank you – you will be receiving a letter very soon with an update and more details but for now, any support you can give would be very much appreciated as we navigate the coming days.

You can read more information through the link higher up in this post. However, please bear in mind that these are proposals only. The consultation will take at least a month and we will be considering every option during that time. Our priority as always is the horses and our staff, and so while we will try and answer your questions as best we can, there’s a lot we just don’t know at this stage.

Thank you so much everyone for your understanding and kind support as always.

If you have unwanted horse rugs and tack in a clean, useable condition we are always welcoming donations here at !

What we aren't able to use for our residents, like fluffy donkey Dougal here, we can sell in our shop or on eBay to raise funds. 🥰

The shop is open every Friday and Monday 10:30am - 3:30pm for dropping off donations, or keep and eye out for our weekend shop open days, the next is this Saturday 24th January (apologies but we will be closed on the Sunday).
