We were at talking about what has become one of the most ambitious peatland programmes in the UK: the Diageo catalysed Peatland Restoration Programme

The ambition of the programme is to restore at least 3,000 hectares of degraded peatland across Scotland, with committing up to £5 million over five years to make it happen.

It’s a programme we’re genuinely excited about - real private capital meeting public funding to move faster and go further.

Over 70 landowners and land managers came together at for the latest Assembly - all focused on one thing: how we actually deliver 30% of Scotland under positive nature management by 2030. 🌎

From opening remarks by Chair Miles Montgomery, to strategic insights from Neil Gunn on WES ambitions for 2026, the day centred around turning targets into action.
Lucy Jenner ( ) brought a clear lens to natural capital - not just as a concept, but as a growing financial opportunity, with real examples already delivering returns across the UK.

Two key panels tackled what matters most:
→ How private finance and public benefit can work together
→ Whether 30 by 30 is even possible without landowners and the private sector stepping up

With voices including Colin Galbraith (), Freddie Ingleby ( ), and Dr Hannah Rudman (), the discussion was honest: momentum is building, but long-term success depends on consistent, sustained demand and subsequent investment.

The takeaway?
The ambition is there. The expertise is in the room.
Now it’s about maintaining the flow of capital and turning intent into measurable action.

A strong, thought-provoking day with the people actively shaping Scotland’s nature-positive future.

In a worrying development here in Scotland, herbivores appear to no longer be the main pressure on peatlands here in Scotland. 🐻

With bears now roaming wild, overgrazing might be the least of our worries!

ACTION - any ideas how are we going to deal with this one?

has announced a £5M, 5-year investment to restore up to 3,000 hectares of degraded peatland across Scotland and we at Caledonian Climate is proud to manage this landmark programme!

Peatlands are vital for carbon storage, biodiversity, water resilience and for protecting the natural resources the whisky industry depends on. This programme brings together scientists, landowners, communities and NGOs to deliver restoration at scale, improve long-term peat use efficiency, and deepen the science behind peatland recovery.

From reducing peat use in maltings to funding landscape-level restoration, this collaboration marks a significant shift toward protecting some of Scotland’s most fragile ecosystems.
