Conservation 2026: 14 Scouts, 5 Explorers, 2 Cubs and 1 Beaver supported by 3 leaders and many parents joined forces with Julian, Hampshire County Council Countryside Ranger, at Hyde Common to help create better habitat for nightjars in the gorse and expose an ancient ditch. Everyone worked hard throughout the morning and afternoon sessions and eventually the gorse was defeated - we could see both fires. This evening we returned to check the embers and found a group of ponies enjoying the warmth. Well done team Sandleheath and thank you to Julian.

Scouts were challenged to a cooking evening with a world theme - they had to pick a country and plan a two course meal. They were banned from selecting Italy (to avoid the easy pizza and pasta options) and they came up with some fantastic meals. Asian Bao Buns with ramen, Mexican tapas, French crepes with salmon, and Greek gyros. The leaders stood back and watched the creations - but did quite a bit of heaving lifting on the washing up. Good team work - well done everyone.

Eagle Trophy 2026 - lots of Scouts from across New Forest Scout District joined together at Wilverley to improve their navigation skills during the day and then compete in teams for the trophy during darkness hours. Seven Scouts from Sandleheath joined in the fun and enjoyed their adventure - lots of kilometres walked, bearings taken and incidents completed - and importantly quite a bit of sugar consumed. Newts were spotted, owls heard and stars identified. The team were back in their alloted time and parents duly arrived to collect at 11pm. Huge thanks to the team for organising this challenge for the Scouts - and to the parents who volunteered to support during the day with navigation (Struan), cooking (Karen) and shadowing (Nicola). Well done everyone.

Beavers started work on their Animal Care Badge this week - starting off learning about a day in the life of a vet. They all have challenges to take home for the week but looks like their animals are being well cared for. Well done Beavers.

Scouts had a great time ice skating yesterday evening in Bournemouth ( Coast Ice Rink) - 33 members of the group (Scouts, parents and some Cubs) enjoyed an almost empty rink - perfect for improving their skills. Great behaviour from the Scouts, thank you to all the parents who took to the ice to support our under 12's and to Gordon for driving the minibus. Hopefully the rink will be back again next year.

Last session for the term with Scouts - they listened to a presentation from one of our Explorers about their Kings Scout award, lost some energy with a patrol snow ball fight and then topped up their sugar levels with a Christmas tree competition - funny how you plan for a nice small tree for each to take home and the Scouts go large and eat as much sugar as possible on the night. We rounded off with a Christmas song lucky dip and the shoe game. Finally we presented badges - including a Gold CSA to Finbar (well done!) as he moves up to join Explorers. Good teamwork from our patrols - leaders now have some time off for good behaviour - see you in 2026!

Its a job I've been putting off for a while - clearly saving it for a professional (or rainy day when an ex-leader has an injury preventing him from cutting down rhododendron) - colours sorted, now they need sharpening....

Great night out with Scouts in the dark and drizzle - four brave adults agreed to lead a night bike ride (having checked the bikes over a couple of weeks ago at the hut - brakes all in working order!). A couple of leaders were fortunate to take a more leisurely stroll around the orienteering course - one of our Scouts has done the course several times now with us and last night he proudly found a marker we had struggled to find for the past two years - challenge achieved! The Scouts also spotted a jumping friend which both leaders struggled to see (our eyesight is clearly failing us!) and Sherby got to be a Scout dog for the night - she kept an eye on the Scouts as they headed into the undergrowth to find the hidden markers (not quite brave enough to go with them!). The cyclists came back muddy and tired - thank you to the leaders and the parents for making the evening work.

Sandleheath Beavers joined in the Remembrance Parade in Fordingbridge at the weekend and at their meeting this week learnt about uniforms, medals, and shared their thoughts about remembrance - as well as getting a little messy with paint to create a large poppy. Great work team.

A big thanks to all of the leaders involved in the Stags Head incident hike yesterday - 11 Scouts from Sandleheath enjoyed a day on the forest, working together as a team to plan the route, take part in some challenges along the way - and reach the end point safely (with some paddling and far too many snack breaks along the way which may have delayed group 1). Group 2 came a close second to Eling - so whilst we didn't retain the trophy the Scouts did extremely well. I was helping to run the observation challenge so my only photo of the day was Sandleheath 2 enjoying a rest in a blow up chair. Well done Scouts.

Health and fitness was on the programme tonight thanks to Otter - and Sandleheath Beavers certainly got stuck in to making (and eating) some great looking fruit kebabs. Thank you to Breamore Farm Shop & Countryside Museum for kindly sponsoring the healthy snacks.
