Young Carers Fun Afternoon

Early in June, Folkestone Rotary hosted an afternoon of fun for local Young Carers, (Folkestone Rotary Super Stars). Over 130 young carers, from 9 Folkestone schools, attended along with school staff. Some schools had their own minibuses, for the others Rotary arranged minibuses from Britannia Coaches.

Folkestone Harbour gave us free use of the Goods Yard and the big screen and this was fabulous as the children could run around freely, play games or sit and watch the film, in a large secure open space.

Half way through the afternoon the children’s entertainer (Juggle It All) began his antics and the children thought he was really funny, especially when he managed to get his whole body inside of a balloon! After his act he taught some of the children how to juggle, blow big bubbles and walk on low stilts. To be honest, he was quite bonkers, but the children loved him, especially when they found out he had been on Britain’s Got Talent!

The Young Carers were able to exchange a token to 'buy' their own ice cream from ‘Coffee Folks’ and the same to ‘buy’ food from the tuck shop that we set up ourselves. Lots of the children enjoyed painting shells in glorious colours, colouring in, playing giant Jenga and some bean bag games. (Although some of the boys preferred throwing the bean bags at each other!) Some children had never seen the big screen at the harbour, so enjoyed sitting and watching the film.

After two hours of being free, fed and entertained the Young Carers headed off back to school. As they left, we saw lots of smiling faces and received lots of lovely thank-yous with a few High Fives. We have had some really positive feedback from the schools that came and we were so glad that the rain mostly held off.

Sam Wraight, the organiser, wants to give a big thank-you to those that helped out on the day, including her daughter Hazel. (Toni, Camella, Alex and Kate.)

It was a great success and definitely something to be repeated.

Here are some quotes from a few Young Carers who attended the afternoon.

“I met a new friend, we ate chocolate ice-cream, watched the magician. and he went in a bubble! We ate crisps together then it was raining and we had to go- it was great fun!” This is from a Year 3 girl who was so excited about the trip, the next day she told all her class about it.

Year 6 girl – “It was all the young carers and you could make new friends and there were lots of activities to do!”

Year 6 girl – “I enjoyed it all!”

Year 6 boy – “I liked the food.”

Year 5 boy – “It was really good and fun and I got to play with another friend who I hadn’t seen for a while, we played lots of fun things at the Harbour.”

Year 5 girl – “I liked watching the movie and the magic show.”

Year 4 boy – “I made some new friends and I enjoyed playing and would like to do it again.

Double the Joy: New Twins Club Launches in Folkestone

Babies and toddlers are both a delight and an energy drain, but imagine what it’s like to have twins! There are very special and unique issues for the parents of twins and for the children themselves. A group of parents asked The Rotary Club of Folkestone for help in setting up a Twins Club so that parents could offer practical and emotional support to each other. Radnor Park Bowls Club offered a space and Rotary offered some funding to get started and today the first session was held. Noisy, messy and great fun. We are delighted to help and Steve, Kate and Tom intend to revisit and enjoy the growth that is inevitable. Good luck Twins Club.

Today, Folkestone Rotary joins communities across the world in commemorating D-Day, 6th June 1944, a pivotal moment in history when Allied forces demonstrated extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and determination in the pursuit of freedom and peace.

We honour the brave servicemen and women who took part in the Normandy landings, remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day.

As we reflect on their legacy, we reaffirm our commitment to the values they fought to defend: service, unity, compassion, and hope for a more peaceful world. Their bravery will never be forgotten, and it remains our duty to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the price of freedom.

Rotary update on recent donations

Odd Socks is a wonderful organisation who collect clothes and on a chosen day they set out all the clothes in a hall, then people come and swap (or just take) clothes that they need. No money changed hands. Odd Socks asked for some money to buy containers and a trolley to transport the clothes. We were delighted to provide funds to help their good cause.

Last year The Rotary Club of Folkestone awarded some funds to St Peter’s School for equipment and materials for making a garden out of a reclaimed piece of land. This year we were invited to come and see the results of the ‘Eco Warriors’ work. It’s amazing how they have transformed the area and created a garden to be proud of. The children were incredibly knowledgeable and clearly love tending the garden. The use of recycled tyres is fantastic and we saw tadpoles in the pond. Well done St Peter’s!
