After winding down the A Town Unearthed (ATU) project with the publication of the illustrated ATU book and the 2013 Current Archaeology Rescue Dig of the Year Award, Folkestone People’s History Centre (FPHC) is working with Folkestone Research and Archaeology Group (FRAG) and other groups towards new events and activities for 2014/2015:
We’ve set a hare running!
* HOP the ‘Heritage Objects Proj
ect’ will look at some of the special objects found in the area, starting with a Roman hare brooch, found in 2011 at East Wear Bay Roman villa. The project will explore what such objects mean to us now and what they meant to people who first made them; how they were made; how they came to Folkestone and what we can learn from them about history, art and heritage.
* A Town Unearthed History Packs- Later this summer ATU will be hosting its final event when it launches its ‘History Packs’: these folders are filled with many previously unseen images and extracts from books on the history of the town. Free to schools, libraries and local societies, the packs will also be available to purchase from local shops or from FPHC.
* Talks: FPHC will be running talks on local history and archaeology from Oct 2014 to March 2015 - look out for details.
* Pop-up events where you can bring your locally found objects and learn more about them from our experts. We will also be working with many other national and regional projects and groups over the next few months including:
CitiZan a pilot project on the archaeology of the coastline led by the Museum of London Archaeology; Cornerlands- a project to explore some sites of special archaeological significance across East Kent; the Folkestone Triennial and Folkestone Town Council’s bid for a new museum for the town.
