As Olu reaches the end of his placement with the Leas Lift, we caught up with him to reflect on his time with the team.

From Quiz Nights and retail to working with local schoolchildren, ticketing, partnerships and planning for the Lift’s future, Olu has played a part across many areas of the project.

We hear about his standout moments, what working on a heritage project has taught him, and why he’ll be back when the Lift reopens!

Even some of our team were scratching their heads when this arrived on site… but of course, it’s a gate valve! 🤔

It might not be the most glamorous part of the Leas Lift, but it’s another example of the unique engineering that keeps this historic water-powered lift working.

The gate valve sits outside the tank on the pipework connecting to the lower tanks and the hopper that fills the cars. Its job is simple but essential, allowing the flow of water to be shut off when cleaning or maintenance is needed.

Just one of the many unusual pieces of engineering being restored as part of the project 💡

📮 Postcard from the past!

🎢 A wonderful glimpse of Folkestone’s seafront from years gone by. Victoria Pier stretches out to sea, alongside the Switchback Railway, boathouse and Bathing Establishment — and at the heart of it all, the Leas Lift’s Lower Station.

So much of Folkestone’s seaside history captured in a single postcard.

🏗️ Work begins on the Leas Lift extension!

The timber frame for our new kitchen and bar space is now in place alongside the historic Lower Station.

Designed to complement the Grade II* listed building, the extension will create a new year-round heritage and hospitality destination while helping secure the Lift’s long-term financial future.

It is the first of several major milestones planned as we work towards reopening the Leas Lift in spring 2027.

Our latest Oral History feature shares the memories of Brigitte Orosinski, whose connection to the Leas Lift began during her childhood in Folkestone 🎧

Growing up opposite the Lift, Brigitte remembers it as both an everyday way home from the beach and a magical part of local life, filled with sandy floors, busy queues and the familiar sounds of its machinery.

Her story also explores the Lift’s wider place in the community, from hidden histories and ghost tales to her work with Strange Cargo gathering memories from across Folkestone. Brigitte’s Oral History is also featured in our latest installation on the upper hoarding.
