The reality of caring for the Battle of Britain Memorial ✈️⁠

Recent coverage has highlighted the financial challenges involved in caring for the Battle of Britain Memorial, and we have been incredibly grateful for the response from the public and the many messages of support and donations we have received. As an independent charity, we receive no public funding and rely on visitors and donations to maintain the site.⁠
⁠
Our spectacular clifftop location is part of what makes the Memorial so special, but being exposed to the elements also means the site takes a battering and maintenance is needed more frequently.⁠
⁠
Sometimes those costs arrive unexpectedly. Recently, one of the automatic entrance doors to The Wing suffered a complete breakdown, bringing an unexpected repair bill alongside the essential maintenance and running costs already needed across the site.⁠
⁠
They might not be the most visible parts of caring for the Memorial, but they are vital to ensuring it remains a fitting place of remembrance for generations to come.⁠
⁠
As we are categorised as a Memorial rather than a museum, funding opportunities can also be limited, particularly when it comes to ongoing maintenance and running costs. That’s why regular support makes such a difference.⁠
