Five years of supporting the Memorial ⚡️

We’re delighted to celebrate ECO MEP’s fifth year as a sponsor of the Battle of Britain Memorial.

Managing Director Paul Ho**er has been connected with The Wing since 2014, when he completed the electrical installation during its construction. Since setting up ECO MEP in 2015, his team has continued to look after the Memorial’s electrical maintenance and installations, most recently creating the exterior floodlighting that illuminates the Memorial’s features at dusk.

Paul describes having developed a really close attachment to The Wing and the Memorial, saying: “I felt it was important to sign ECO MEP up as a sponsor because of our close links and because I recognise how important this Memorial is to the vital task of remembering the sacrifice and bravery shown by the Few in 1940.”

August 20 - On this day in 1940, while addressing the House of Commons, Prime Minister Winston Churchill uttered perhaps his most famous words, when he said: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so Few”.

The men of Fighter Command who served during the Battle of Britain have been referred to as ‘The Few’ since shortly after that speech was made.⁠

The Battle of Britain Memorial exists to honour ‘The Few’ and preserve their legacy for future generations.

The Battle of Britain Memorial was honoured to welcome New Zealand’s Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Darryn Webb, during Memorial Day in July. On his first visit, he paid tribute to fellow New Zealanders who served during the Battle of Britain, including Sir Keith Park and Air Commodore Al Deere, describing the experience of standing at the Memorial overlooking the White Cliffs as “poignant and humbling”.

There are 128 New Zealand airmen commemorated on the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, the third-largest contingent after the UK and Poland. During his visit, Air Vice-Marshal Webb reflected on their service and sacrifice, finding Al Deere’s name on the Wall and standing alongside the bust of Sir Keith Park.

August 18 - On this day in 1940, the Luftwaffe mounted large scale raids on targets in southern England that included the RAF bases at Kenley and Biggin Hill, resulting in both sides suffering heavy casualties in intense fighting. It is now often referred to as “The Hardest Day”.⁠

August 15 - For the Luftwaffe in 1940 this was "Black Thursday". It deployed major forces to attack airfields and Chain Home (radar) stations, while seeking to bring Fighter Command to battle, but suffered casualties on a large scale. Once again, faulty intelligence was part of the problem. Believing that Fighter Command was not in a position to resist in the area, the Luftwaffe attacked northeast England from Norway and Denmark, but were attacked off the Farne Islands by Spitfires of No 72 and other squadrons. Prime Minister Winston Churchill said it had been "one of the greatest days in history".⁠
