LARGE ANIMAL RESCUE FROM QUICKSAND THIS AFTERNOON

BSAR crews regularly undertake patrols across the Bay, today being no exception traveling right across to Morecambe and pitching up outside our friends and colleagues at the RNLI Hovercraft station Morecambe ( Sorry about the mess on your nice clean concrete slipway guys 😂😂 I’ll send them back with a brush 😂😂👍)

These patrols help with Keeping up with changes in channels - shifting sandbanks - and softsand all plays a part in delivering an efficient and safe service.

But on the Sherps return from Morecambe they were diverted by the BSAR Station Officer following a tip off from our friends at Arnside & South Lakes Coastguard Rescue Team to reports of a sheep stuck in quicksand in a pumping station outflow on the ulpher side of the Bay .

Following 18 phone calls by the S/O establishing the animals location, made not just to Holyhead and the first informant but several farmers who’s land all boundary’s with each other it was established that the animal belonged to Charles Geldard who was swiftly down to help with the recovery of his animal along with Steve Harrison another local farmer all being very grateful.

BSAR can only provide this amazing service with your continued help and support financially and right now we are trying really hard to raise funds to replace our main rescue vehicle .

It doesn’t matter if you can only spare a quid or two, please help keep this amazing service going

CALL-OUT THIS EVENING- PERSONS CUT OFF BY THE TIDE AT SILVERDALE

Despite the tides not being particularly high tonight please don’t become complacent as they are sufficiently deep to leave you cut off and surrounded with nowhere to go .

Tonight our Amphibious rescue vehicle was launched from Arnside but immediately stood down as news via Arnside & South Lakes Coastguard Rescue Team came in that those people in question had made a run for it and waded through the incoming tide .

Thanks to the first informant who gave vital information as to the location of these people .

BSAR are trying to raise a significant amount of money to replace our amphibious rescue vehicle , please click on the link and donate it doesn’t matter if it’s a quid or a grand it’s appreciated just the same .

Call-out - Missing Dog Walker
Grange over Sands

Today a concerned caring and observant member of the public called the coastguard after a vehicle which makes regular appearances for dog walking on the shore had been abandoned in its normal place for several days which was well out of character for this person.

Nine of BSARs crew responded and the teams drone was also launched to conduct a search of the immediate shore line near Home island Grange.

Thankfully after some work tracking down the owners address by Cumbria Police and Holhead Coastguard the owner was thankfully located and explained that the van had broken down and he’d had to leave it .

Happy ending which we always like, great team work from all agency’s involved

Press Release 12 May 2026
New ‘jewel in the crown’ trail improves access to nature in Morecambe Bay.
A new accessible trail with free all-terrain mobility scooter hire is being
launched on Tuesday 12 May by organisations who have worked together to
devise a delightful 6-mile route for those with reduced mobility. The Three
Nature Reserves accessible trail allows users to enjoy RSPB Leighton Moss,
Gait Barrows and Trowbarrow Nature Reserves in the Arnside and Silverdale
National Landscape, which straddles the Cumbria/Lancashire border.
The route, starting at RSPB Leighton Moss Visitor Centre, takes in some of the UK’s most important
wildlife habitats and stunning landscapes and offers easy access to the largest area of reedbed in the
North West, home to many iconic birds such as Bitterns, Marsh Harriers and Bearded T**s.
From Leighton Moss, the route leads to Trowbarrow Local Nature Reserve where fascinating fossils
exposed by past limestone quarrying can be spotted, along with Bee and Fly Orchids. It goes on to Gait
Barrows National Nature Reserve, one of Britain’s most important limestone landscapes and is home to
unique butterflies such as the Duke of Burgundy Fritillary. It then goes through Coldwell Meadows,
managed by the Arnside and Silverdale Landscape Trust, where limestone grasslands and traditional hay-
meadows present a riot of summer flower displays. From booming Bitterns to/blooming Bird’s-foot
Trefoil the reserves provide habitat for a multitude of flowering plants and wildlife, creating a sensory
experience for people to enjoy and savour.
The trail finale goes through limestone woodland with veteran Yews, an ancient limekiln and far-reaching
views across Silverdale Moss to Arnside Tower – arguably one of the best vistas in the National
Landscape.
The route is challenging, along a mix of both surfaced and unsurfaced paths, but with the right equipment
and support, visitors can now enjoy a truly off-road experience without surfaced paths that takes you into
the wilderness. For easy and comfortable access to this adventurous and rugged route, three all-terrain
mobility scooters (Trampers) are available to hire, free of charge, from RSPB Leighton Moss.

Place-based charity Morecambe Bay Partnership has worked with Arnside and Silverdale National
Landscape, Arnside and Silverdale Landscape Trust, Bay Search and Rescue, Natural England and RSPB
to create more inclusive access, so more people can enjoy the Bay’s inspiring landscapes, nature, history
and culture. The creation of the route and purchase, maintenance and insurance of the mobility vehicles
was funded through a grant from the Coastal Communities Fund awarded to Morecambe Bay Partnership
in 2021.
Sarah Mason, CEO at Morecambe Bay Partnership said “We are delighted that this accessible trail is now
open for all to enjoy. The benefits of getting out into nature to experience the beauty of the landscape are
immeasurable and now people who have difficulty accessing the countryside can have a real adventure
with their friends and family with the added bonus of refreshments in the Leighton Moss cafe at the end.’’
RSPB Senior Site manager Jarrod Sneyd said “Today’s route launch is another milestone in wider
collaboration to make this special landscape bigger, better and more connected for people and wildlife.
It’s a strong model of joined-up delivery between nature conservation and community organisations and
demonstrates our shared ownership and aspirations for our landscape.”
An invitation-only launch event is taking place on Tuesday 12 May at Leighton Moss Nature Reserve,
where the route will be officially opened by RSPB CEO, Beccy Speight and Natural England’s Cumbria
Deputy Director Helen Kirkby.

HOW DO TIDES WORK - Read on but first help us keep this service going !

OK HERE WE GO - HOW DO TIDES WORK

In the simplest terms there are two types of tide ( spring tides ) these are big tides strong powerful fast and noisy , and then ( neap tides) smaller and less powerful, but still damn sneaky and can catch the most experienced wanderer out if you don’t check over your shoulder !

Spring tides - ( have nothing to really do with the time of year) but really the time of the month.
Gravity = has a huge role in how tides behave, when the Sun - the Moon - and the Earth are aligned with each other, they create a huge combined gravitational pull on the surface of the earth, and hey, guess what moves - the ocean. The Moon is the big daddy in all of this, and when you see a full or new moon you will see ( spring tides ) the biggest of tides, and in the Bay they bring exciting speed and sound and changes to the contours of the Bay, ripping up sandbanks and creating new gullies and channels.

Neap - tides - when the Sun and the Moon are at right angles to each other , a much weaker gravitational pull and hence smaller less powerful tides - ( no full moon here - but a quarter moon instead) “ I’m sure there’s an advert for
” Jaffa cakes “maybe where the teacher in the class room is explaining to the kids about the moon “ I think she said - as she bites into it - Half moon full moon total eclipse 😂 “ Maybe that’s how to remember it - not half moon but quarter moon !

Other big factors which affect the speed and hight of the tide apart from the wind and barometric pressures are the contours of the coastline, the depth of the ocean floor and the width of the inlet.

HOW MANY TIDES DO WE GET IN MORECAMBE BAY ?

Most coastal areas see two high tides and two low tides, mainly of a similar size every 24 hrs - this is due to the earths rotation - just because it’s dark and its time for bed doesn’t mean the tide stops . In fact it’s pretty spooky out there at night but so beautiful and teaming with bird life - thousands of birds feeding - fish darting across our path in the headlamps , just beautiful but just as dangerous too.

Ok guys there’s sooo much more to tell about tides, but that’s all for now folks !

Now get back to the top of this page and help us fund our replacement rescue vehicle Please, OR if your a giant Company then sponsor us and let promote you here. And on our vehicle for the next twenty years !

MORECAMBE BAYS TIDES ARE SOME OF THE FASTEST IN THE WORLD

Much of the 120 square miles of the Bay can be covered in water hours before the predicted high water time. And much of this goes on out of sight , filling the meandering channels and gullies until it’s too late and you find yourself cut off .

As one of the fastest moving tides in the World - this is why it pays to look at the tide times before going out for a walk and unless your on a guided walk, stay very close to the very edges of the bay on high or raised ground so you can still enjoy its beauty, but get off quickly and easily should you need to .

Todays tide for instance, not the biggest by any stretch, but it still never fails to impress when your up close, and it picked up some considerable speed as the Bay narrows heading toward Grange and then Arnside and eventually the Kent estuary.

On our pre tide routine patrol today we traveled out into the Bay in our Sherp, from our base The Bob-In Cafe Arnside and headed toward Hest bank and Morecambe to meet the incoming tide, constantly watching with a keen eye for anyone who may well have strayed a step or two in the wrong direction, or worse still become stuck in the sand !

SO HERE’S SOME REALLY IMPORTANT SAFETY INFO

Did you know that the times published in the tide time tables and on tidal apps, are the predicted times of HIGH WATER ( this means when the tide is fully in and at its highest) and are subject to change which is why they are called PREDICTED

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT

Many people don’t appreciate that the tide starts to rush into the Bay several hours before the predicted high water time, and these times can vary significantly depending the size of the tide ( SPRING OR NEAP) the direction and strength of the wind, and barometric pressures.

Today the wind was blowing off the Cumbria Fells and out toward the open sea, this commonly has a slowing effect on the incoming tide making it late to arrive and subsequently slow to fill the Bay. BUT when the wind is strong and blowing in from the sea, it’s just the opposite, it charges in at a frightening pace way before the predicted times.

Today we met the incoming tide near Jenny Browns point over three and a half hours before the predicted high water time, so be warned depending on where you stand around the Bay depends on when you see it come whistling past .

Bay Search and Rescue are a registered charity and we are all volunteers providing an invaluable free service. We need your help to raise funds to replace our frontline rescue vehicle the Sherp.
