Working to help promote natural and sustainable healthcare through the use of ‘good science' and 'good law’. ANH-Intl is a global non-governmental organisation promoting natural and sustainable approaches to health and environmental care. Through our work, with its key focus on Europe (www.anh-europe.org) and the USA (www.anh-usa.org), we help to shape an appropriate scientific and regulatory framework that encourages increased adoption of natural and sustainable approaches to healthcare. Our mission, by working with a diverse cross-section of society, including health professionals, companies, consumers and political representatives, is to help reduce the burden of chronic, degenerative diseases that lead to a unnecessary loss of quality of life and threaten to cripple healthcare systems and economies. We also focus on evaluating the health and environmental impact of food production systems, in the process identifying those that are most sustainable yet are capable of satisfying the needs of our planet’s growing population. As a means of raising awareness of the issues, we engage in education, legal support and advocacy to help improve consumer engagement and freedom of choice as well as removing barriers to trade in products and services integral to natural and sustainable healthcare. The organisation was founded in 2002 by Robert Verkerk PhD, an internationally acclaimed expert in sustainability, who has headed the organisation since its start. Through its work particularly in Europe and the US, ANH-Intl works to accomplish its diverse mission through its unique application of ‘good science’ and good law’.

For hundreds of thousands of years, human biology developed around movement, daylight, darkness, changing temperatures, periods without food and daily contact with the natural world.

Then, in evolutionary terms, almost overnight, we changed the environment.

Artificial light. Screens. Constant food. Sitting. Temperature-controlled buildings. Urbanisation. Less nature. Different pollutants. Different stresses.

Modern life has brought extraordinary benefits. But here's the question we don't ask often enough:

Has our environment changed faster than our biology can adapt?

If we want to understand the explosion in chronic illness, perhaps we need to look beyond what's going wrong inside people — and start looking at what's changed around them.

FOUR MEN. FOUR STAGE IV CANCERS. FOUR EXCEPTIONAL OUTCOMES.

Each had been given a prognosis measured in months.

Each took a different path, combining conventional oncology with substantial complementary, integrative or other non-standard approaches.

Years later, they found themselves together on one stage — having achieved prolonged remission, cancer-free status or scans showing no visible disease. Yes to Life described them as “exceptional survivors”.

But what if, rather than giving them a label, we studied them?

Outliers may have something important to teach us.

Rob Verkerk PhD reflects on an extraordinary weekend at the Yes to Life Charity conference and asks what these cancer journeys might reveal.

Four men with Stage IV cancer defied their prognoses. Their stories—and the science explored at Yes To Life’s annual conference—suggest exceptional recoveries deserve investigation, not dismissal.

For today's children, wireless exposure isn't occasional. It's part of the environment they're growing up in.

Now an international group of scientists and doctors is calling for stronger protections for children, arguing that current exposure limits don't adequately address biological effects or children's particular vulnerabilities.

The health effects of non-ionising electromagnetic fields remain scientifically contested.

But perhaps that's exactly where the interesting question begins:

When exposure starts in childhood and may continue for a lifetime, how certain should we need to be about harm before taking simple precautions?

What do you think?

How would you feel if the government mandated a supplement - whether you need it or not?

That's essentially the question raised by mandatory folic-acid fortification.

From 13 December, most non-wholemeal common-wheat flour in the UK must contain added folic acid. The aim — preventing serious neural tube defects — matters.

But this isn't targeted supplementation.

Anyone eating foods made with the affected flour is dosed with folic acid, irrespective of age, s*x, nutritional status or individual need.

And that's where the debate gets interesting.

Should preventing a problem affecting one section of the population mean supplementing much of the population through a staple food?

What if healthcare's biggest problem is the question it asks?

We’ve become very good at managing disease.

But what if we put the same energy into creating health before disease takes hold?

In a wide-ranging new podcast with hosts Dr Rosy Daniel and Karen Mellers, Rob Verkerk PhD explores why our food, water, air, movement, stress and wider environment cannot be separated from our health — and why healthcare needs a more ecological approach.

From regulation and vested interests to resilience, behaviour change and healthy ageing, this is ultimately a conversation about choice, empowerment and taking back the levers that influence our health.

CAN YOU REALLY SAY “SUPPLEMENTS DON’T WORK”?

Which supplement?

At what dose?

In what form?

For whom?

Vitamin D isn't magnesium. Iron isn't fish oil. A deficient person isn't the same as someone who is already replete.

Xand van Tulleken’s Make Me Well raises some legitimate concerns about the wellness industry. But Rob Verkerk PhD argues that legitimate scepticism becomes something else when it writes off an entire category of nutritional interventions.

And with European regulators currently considering new limits on vitamins, minerals and botanicals, this debate has consequences far beyond one book.

When did ‘clean’ have to smell of chemicals?

We've become so accustomed to fragranced homes that artificial smells have become shorthand for “clean”. But new research suggests our obsession with scent may be creating an invisible source of indoor air pollution.

Researchers found that fragrance compounds released by cleaning products can reach concentrations tens to hundreds of times higher than terpenes naturally present in forests.

Reacting with ozone indoors, they rapidly form billions or trillions of nanoparticles small enough to pe*****te deep into the lungs and potentially enter the bloodstream.

The estimated particle dose during cleaning can even rival that experienced beside a busy road.

Perhaps it's time to rethink what clean actually smells like. As one of the researchers puts it, clean air shouldn't really smell of anything.

When does regulation stop protecting people — and start restricting choice?

In her latest investigation, Marika Sboros examines the long-running battle over how South Africa regulates vitamins, minerals and natural health products and whether pharmaceutical-style rules are being applied where a more proportionate, risk-based approach is needed.

ANH founder Dr Rob Verkerk puts the wider issue starkly:

“Food is medicine and always has been. Modern regulatory systems get the priorities backwards, rewarding treatment of disease over prevention.”

His concern is that when regulators blur the line between foods, natural products and medicines, consumer choice, prevention and access to natural health options can all suffer.

This is not an argument against regulation.

It is an argument for regulation that matches the risk — not the pharmaceutical model by default.
