Volunteer spotlight: Craig ๐๐
Itโs National Volunteersโ Week and this month, weโre sharing a few words from one of our fabulous team, Craig, to give a flavour of what volunteering with Calls & Visits is really like ๐.
๐ข Why did you get involved with Calls & Visits? ๐ข
โI wanted to do something useful in my local community and give a bit of my time to someone who might need it. Iโve always enjoyed meeting new people and hearing about their lives, but what really stayed with me was thinking about how hard it must be to be at home with little or no contact with other people. I felt that if I could help in even a small way, it was worth doing.โ
๐ข What does your volunteering involve? ๐ข
โI visit someone once a week for around 90 minutes. Thereโs no set agenda โ we usually sit and chat about whatever comes up. It might be what sheโs been doing that week, memories from when she was growing up, stories about her family, or lovely memories of her late husband. Itโs about spending time with someone, listening, chatting and giving them a bit of regular company.โ
๐ขWhat would you say to someone considering volunteering?๐ข
โDefinitely do it. You donโt need any special skills and you donโt need to have anything planned or prepared. Just being willing to turn up, have a chat, listen and give someone your time can make a real difference. Itโs a small commitment, but it can mean a lot to someone who may not have many visitors or regular contact with others.โ
A huge thank you to Craig for sharing his experience with us ๐.
14.2 million people in the UK have formally volunteered at least once a month - how great is that?! If you could spare a little time each week and would like to make a difference in your local community, we currently have people waiting to be matched.
