Have you wondered why there's scaffolding on St Leonard's Church Flamstead again? It's for essential work to be carried out to secure the vestry and chancel roofs and make them water-tight. The tiles are all being inspected and reset/pointed as required. The chimney is also being repointed. While the scaffolding is in place work will also be carried out to renovate the guttering.

This is all being funded by supporters of the village charity, the Friends of St Leonard's and will cost in the region of £12,000. If you would like to donate to the charity there's a link on our website where you can make a one off contribution or sign up to a regular donation. www.friendsofstleonards.org

Once this area of the church is restored, it also means that the extensive collection of historic documents which have been archived as part of the Heritage Project can be safely stored for future generations.

The Friends of St Leonard’s Flamstead charity is now more than 30 years old. It was set up in 1995 when the tower was threatened with closure as it was dangerous. One of the founding members, Harry Birtley, who's now in his nineties, spoke movingly at an event in the church to mark three decades of fundraising.

Sound up! If you missed this morning's rare 3 hour bell ringing session (known as a full peal), here are a few recordings to give you a flavour. Note the difference in sound from inside and outside the church! Youngsters from Flamstead Village School also came along to witness part of it. Thank you to the professional group of bell ringers from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire who added a lovely atmosphere to a rather gloomy day. The bells which date back to 1664 were restored and retuned in 2023 at a cost of £50,000 with a large part of that funding provided by the supporters of the FoSL charity
