Would you like to feel more confident talking to your young person about drugs and understanding the issues affecting young people today?

Join Barnardo's Substance Use Education Team for an informative and interactive workshop covering:
✅ The current context of drugs and young people
✅ How to have open, honest conversations with your young person
✅ Resources and practical information for parents and carers.

Our free Drug Awareness Workshops provide up-to-date information, practical guidance and a safe space to learn more.

International Overdose Awareness Day may have passed, but the message remains the same.

Overdose is preventable. Lives can be saved through awareness, education, compassion, and access to support.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community.

Let’s continue the conversation beyond 31 August and work together to reduce stigma, increase understanding, and support people and families affected by substance use.

What does the future of substance use support look like?

A week ago we were lucky enough to attend Day 2 of the Scottish Drugs Forum Conference 2026, which explored emerging trends, new research and innovative responses to some of the most pressing challenges facing communities today.

From conversations around co***ne and ketamine to drug checking services, neurodiversity, and the value of peer-led research, delegates were challenged to think differently and respond effectively to changing patterns of use.

The message throughout the day was clear: understanding, innovation and collaboration are essential if we want to reduce drug-related deaths and improve outcomes for people across Scotland.

A huge thank you to the speakers, contributors and people with lived and living experience who shared their knowledge, research and perspectives throughout the day - they challenged our thinking and reminded us that meaningful change happens when evidence, compassion and action come together.

💜 Knowing the signs of an overdose could help save a life.

Overdose does not always look the way people expect. Being able to recognise the warning signs and act quickly can make all the difference.

Our reel highlights some of the common signs and symptoms of overdose, including:

• Unresponsiveness or difficulty waking up
• Slow, shallow or stopped breathing
• Blue or grey lips and fingertips
• Pinpoint pupils
• Gurgling, choking or snoring sounds

If you think someone may be experiencing an overdose, call 999 immediately and administer naloxone if available.

Naloxone is a safe, life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and provide vital time until emergency services arrive.

In Fife, free naloxone kits and training are available from:

• Community Pharmacies
• With You Harm Reduction Service
• Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD) (home delivery)

Yesterday's Overdose Awareness Day may be over, but the need for awareness, education and support remains.

Overdose does not discriminate.

Substance use and overdose can affect people from all walks of life, regardless of age, background or circumstance.

That is why it is so important to continue having open, honest conversations about substance use, risk reduction and where to access support.

At Barnardo's Fife, we believe that providing young people, families and communities with accurate information helps people make informed choices and reduces harm.

💜 Awareness is not just for one day. It's a conversation we all need to keep having.

Every August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) brings a global community together to take action on overdose.

This year the theme for IOAD is 25 Years On. Still Needed.

For 25 years, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought people together to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives.

The truth is, we shouldn’t still need this day. But we do.

Overdose continues to affect every community. Yet it can be prevented. We know how to reduce risk and keep people safe. By speaking openly, learning from one another, and treating each other with care and respect, we build a world where fewer lives are lost.

Because while this day is still needed, it doesn’t have to be forever.

Our Substance Use Education Team is delighted to be returning to schools across West Fife this term. We look forward to working with pupils, supporting learning, and promoting informed choices around substance use.

Alongside our planned programme, we continue to offer tailored substance use education sessions for learners in PSS and other non-mainstream education settings. Schools can also request additional sessions for learners from any year group where there are clear, identifiable needs for further substance use education that cannot be met within the existing PSE curriculum.
