Blackdown Hill Challenge

Blackdown Hill Challenge A trail run from Fernhurst Recreation Ground to the summit of Blackdown and the Temple of the Winds. Backdown is the highest point in South Downs National Park.

There is also a family run 1, 2, or 3 times round the recreation ground for the kids. The event has been held on and off for the past 30+ years. Initially the youth club ran it, then in 2019 it was resurrected by Pavilion2022 but was not held again until 2022 due to Covid-19. The intention is for it to be an annual event in support of the village sports clubs.

52 brave runners took to the start line for the return of the Blackdown Hill Challenge. The race from Fernhurst Rec to the summit of the highest hill in Sussex and back is a fundraiser for the Pavilion2022 campaign.

Tim Short from Shillinglee smashed the record by five minutes with a time of 30m53. Fastest woman was Caroline Whelan of Dorking & Mole Valley Athletics Club with 43m52. Neither looks old enough but they also qualified for the veterans’ awards!
