🌸 Dorset WI Annual Meeting at Lighthouse, Poole 🌸
Stephanie and Janet represented Absolutely WI at the Dorset WI Annual Meeting, and what a fantastic and memorable day it was!
The meeting began with members and guests singing Jerusalem, followed by the formal AGM business. Janet attended as our delegate, voting on the adoption of the minutes, standing orders and accounts.
Our first speaker was Jeremy Spake, who shared fascinating stories from his career with the BBC on Aeroflot. A remarkable linguist, he speaks over 30 languages, including Russian and Mongolian, and is an ambassador for more than 20 charities.
We were then entertained by the Ashley Heath Choir, who sang a wonderful medley of songs. It was lovely to see our own Maureen and Elaine among the choir members! 🎶
In the afternoon, Sara Jacson MBE spoke about her work as a trustee of a charity in North Dorset for women and children who are fleeing domestic abuse. The refuge offers a safe place to stay for up to six months, with confidentiality being essential to protect those who need its support.
Our final speaker was Moira Cameron, the first woman Beefeater at the Tower of London. After more than 20 years in the Army, Moira shared her experiences of life as a Beefeater, including the challenges of misogyny and bullying and their impact on her health and wellbeing. Her story was both moving and inspiring.
The day concluded with the National Anthem, and Stephanie and Janet agreed that it had been a great day.
Both would thoroughly recommend that more Absolutely WI members attend next year’s meeting. It was an excellent day filled with interesting speakers, music, inspiration and the opportunity to meet other WI members.
