Yesterday's volunteer session was a little different from our usual conservation tasks!

Instead of cutting and clearing, we enjoyed an interesting and educational pond-dipping session led by Ranger Cameron. It was fascinating to discover just how much wildlife is thriving beneath the water's surface.

We spotted so many tiny creatures during the session - take a look at the photos to see some of our amazing finds!

Why not come along and join us? Our volunteer sessions run every three weeks and are a great way to learn new skills, meet like-minded people, and help care for our local green spaces.

Our next session will be on 4th July.

Thank you to Cameron & Lida for the photos.

🌿🌸 A huge shoutout to our incredible BLCV volunteers who came together on Saturday for a day full of sunshine, teamwork, and planting magic! ☀️🌼

With trowels in hand and smiles on their faces, the team planted a beautiful variety of blooms including Begonias, Petunias, Ageratum, Antirrhinum, Geraniums, and Lobelia bushes. 🌺🌱

Their hard work has transformed the main entrance to Bedfont Lakes, filling it with vibrant colours and lovely fragrances for all visitors to enjoy.

Today we made the most of the marvellous weather by continuing our restoration of the Hibernaculum 🌿

We added a layer of topsoil mixed with sand before sowing wildflower seed, helping to create the perfect conditions for growth. To protect the area from disturbance, we also installed stakes with rope, and carefully placed logs and sticks around the base to clearly mark it out. Fingers crossed this gives it the protection it needs to thrive!

A brilliant effort today from our amazing volunteers 👏 If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to have you join us. We meet every three weeks, with our next session on 23rd May - why not come along and see what we’re up to?

👏 The Bedfont Lakes volunteers always do an incredible job caring for our local green space - we’re so grateful for your continued dedication!

🌿 A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers! 🌿

Yesterday’s team did a marvellous job tending to the flower beds and carefully thinning out the woodland at the back of the fishing lake. By removing thin saplings and yearling trees, more light can reach the woodland floor- helping to promote greater biodiversity and encouraging a richer, more varied habitat.

All trees were carefully surveyed for nests prior to any removal, ensuring wildlife was protected throughout the work.

With a bit of patience, we’re hopeful this work will reward us with beautiful wildflowers emerging in the springs to come 🌼

If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to have you join us! We meet every three weeks at the Information Centre at 10am.

Yesterday’s conservation session was a wonderfully productive one 🌿

We thinned and removed many of the self-seeded aspen that had gradually encroached from the pen onto the path edge over the years. It’s the sort of slow change that’s easy to miss, but keeping paths clear and maintaining balance is so important for both access and habitat health.

Further along the path, we worked carefully in an area where we frequently see beautiful bee orchids. We were mindful not to disturb their habitat or upset the delicate equilibrium that allows them to thrive - conservation is as much about restraint as it is about action.

Woodchip was laid at either end of the little footbridge, improving access and making it safer to cross. We also carried out some light management work around the adjacent pond, which was surprisingly dry. Given the amount of recent rainfall, this was unusual and likely due to transpiration - something we’ll keep an eye on and plan to address next winter.

The beds around the Information Centre were also thoroughly weeded, making a real visible difference to the area.

Of course, no session would be complete without our well-earned tea break -- this week accompanied by an excellent wildlife quiz! 🐝

A huge thank you to everyone for your continued dedication and hard work. It really does make a difference, and we look forward to many more sessions together.

If you would like to join us, please email [email protected] for more information.

🌿 A brilliant start to the year! 🌿

The Bedfont Lakes Conservation Volunteers kicked off the new year in style today with a deep litter pick around our local park, helping keep it looking lovely for everyone to enjoy. 💚

An incredible haul too -- 27 bags of litter, one tent, and plenty of other bits collected along the way.

Winter litter picks often generate such large amounts as historic litter is exposed when vegetation dies back, litter that is usually hidden during spring and summer.

Huge thanks to everyone who gave their time and energy today; your efforts really make a difference! 🙌

✨ Why not come along and join us?
Our next session is on 7th February, and then every 3 weeks thereafter.

🎄 Bedfont Lakes Conservation Volunteers – Last Session of 2025! 🎄

Yesterday marked our final volunteering session of the year, and we rounded it off in true BL style -- gathered around a cosy campfire, enjoying baked potatoes, warming mince pies, and plenty of festive treats. Most importantly, we enjoyed each other’s company. It’s not all work and no play, and yesterday was the perfect reminder of the brilliant community we’ve built together.

We’ll be back with a fresh new start in the new year, resuming on 17th January. If you’d like to get involved, simply email -- [email protected] or meet us at the Info Centre at 10am. New faces are always welcome!

A huge thank you to everyone -- yesterday was a fantastic session, and your dedication throughout the year has been truly inspiring.

From all the Countryside Rangers, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
You are all truly amazing. 🌿✨

🌲Saturday 15th – Conservation Session Update! 🌲

Last weekend we made great progress thinning out the strip of woodland behind the fishing lake. This will allow more light to reach the woodland floor and open up a much better view across the lake. Thank you to everyone who came along and got stuck in!

🎄 Only one more session left before Christmas!
Join us on Saturday 6th December for our final meet-up of the year. We’ll be baking potatoes over a cosy campfire, doing a bit of light conservation work, and of course enjoying plenty of festive treats.

📍 Meet at 10am at the Info Centre

🌿 Bedfont Lakes Conservation Volunteers – 25th October Update 🌿

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to today’s session!

Our tasks included:

🌳 Relocating brush piles to create a dead hedge in line with the land’s contours -- great for wildlife and habitat diversity.

🪓 Tidying up after a recent corporate group by cutting tree stumps lower to reduce trip hazards.

🌼 Weeding the raised beds on either side of the overflow car park -- keeping them neat and cared for really shows the dedication of our volunteers!

Amazing work as always -- your time and effort make such a difference to Bedfont Lakes! 👏
