We recently saw a post on social media about one of our defib cabinet locations in Ancells Farm.

The cabinet door was open and the local resident was worried about the lock potentially being damaged.

We went out to check the site and found the defib and cabinet folder safely stored inside.

Please if you see one of our cabinets open, close the door to protect the medical equipment from the elements.

If the defib is missing or you are worried please call the mobile number on the cabinet door, within the cabinet on the folder stored inside or the telephone number tagged onto the device.

Alternatively there is an email address on the cabinet if you need any information or wish to contact us.

Some of our cabinets have an access code which is available when you call 999 and the nature of the call makes it appropriate for the call taker to give CPR instructions.

Many don’t have an access code to allow quick access to the device in emergency.

Whilst we really don’t mind people having a peek as to what is inside one of our cabinets, please do make sure you close the cabinet door afterwards!

Thank you, Richard @ North East Hants Community Defib Scheme.

Whilst performing our regular checks and maintaining the cabinet at Peter Driver sports ground in Church Crookham we’ve had to remove some graffiti. The extra effort and time needed to clean this up has meant less sites were attended to this week and will require extra journeys for our volunteer team to get round all the sites we look after. We look after this site for Church Crookham Parish Council.

Lots of work has been going on this week at NEHCDS. We’ve been unveiling a new site at Southwood Country Park, new contact details stickering at Church Crookham and Fleets Men’s Shed. A new cabinet at Jump In in Camberley and replacing new pads and battery at the Dog & Partridge public house in Yateley which is a new site we’ve taken over.

This week we have made the difficult decision to change to a locked door mechanism on the defib cabinet outside The Neighbour on Fleet Road in Fleet.

The guidance is quite clear from the British Heart Foundation - Only secure defibrillators in a locked enclosure if there’s risk of theft or vandalism.

But that’s the issue, inline with our regular checks we’ve seen a marked increase in vandalism and interference with this site overnight at weekends. Most recently the defib was taken from the cabinet and the lid snapped off, the defib has been repaired and returned to the cabinet.

Only a few weeks ago this defib was successfully used when a member of the public collapsed at a nearby business.

For all of those worried about how you might access this or other defibs held in a secure public access cabinet the information is uploaded to a national database called The Circuit, this information is available to 999 ambulance call takers who will offer the code and give instruction to support the use of this if an emergency occurs nearby.

Many thanks to Hart District Council staff and Hampshire Constabulary based out of the council offices for its safe return. Also thank you to WEL Medical Limited for ongoing technical support with both our defibs and cabinets.

Sainsburys Local in Ash Road, Aldershot, has joined our growing list of places with publicly available defibrillators, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The portable life saving devices are used to give the heart an electric shock to restart it, usually in a sudden cardiac arrest. Without immediate intervention like this, most cardiac arrests are fatal.

Thanks go to store manager, Richard Main who has agreed for the defibrillator to be located at the store, in a busy area of Aldershot.

Working with the North East Hampshire Community Defibrillator scheme, we have now installed a number of defibrillators locally, which are registered nationally at: www.defibfinder.uk

The defib finder website is used by all ambulance stations across the UK to help them to locate the nearest defibrillator when 999 is called, in response to a cardiac arrest. At a time when every minute matters, this information is critical to enable bystander defibrillation to start, before the ambulance crew arrive.

Our Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Healthy Communities and Active Lives, Councillor Sophie Porter popped into the store to meet paramedic and manager of the defibrillator scheme, Richard Taylor, to see the site of the new cabinet, located at the entrance to the store.

First time I’ve seen this done, but it’s not ok - using one of our defib cabinets in Farnborough to deliver a parcel. Not sure I know when it became ok to do this or leave parcels on doorsteps but anyway. It’s definitely not a letterbox. Well done

We’ve added a further site to the circuit today in a telephone kiosk outside The Queens Head in Dogmerfield. For this site we are working in collaboration with Dogmersfield Parish Council, who we have made assurances to that we will check on a regular basis. It’s incredibly important defibs are on the British Heart Foundations ‘The Circuit’ so that members of the public can be instructed to retrieve the unit and prompted in the use of the device, as well as CPR if an out of hospital cardiac arrest occurs.

Here are some before and after photos from our new site at Sainsbury’s Local in Aldershot. We have inherited this from another organisation and given the cabinet a well needed spruce up with new stickering, a clean and lubrication. I’m sure you’ll agreed it now looks the part.
