Medieval people were religious and familiar with the Bible – unlike many today. Enlightenment “gentlemen scholars” (mathematicians, philosophers, and courtiers) were drawn to the moral and symbolic potential of the stonemasons’ craft. By the 1600s, lodges began to include these non‑operative members, transforming the lodge into a forum for philosophical exchange.
The Freemasons central idea was the building of a better society through democracy, religious toleration, societal and personal development and applying rational thinking. They borrowed from the operative builders’ craft and took their central allegory from the Bible, the common source book known to all, in which the only building described in any detail is King Solomon’s Temple.
The legendary construction of his Temple in Jerusalem provides symbolism for Masonic rituals, representing spiritual building, wisdom, and moral development, with Masons seeing themselves as builders of a spiritual temple, emulating Solomon's wisdom and the temple's perfection.
Freemasonry likens personal development to a stonemason's journey from rough to smooth ashlar, symbolising moral and spiritual refinement. Using stonemasons’ tools they strive to embody virtues. The ultimate aim is to become a perfected individual, contributing positively to society, akin to a perfected stone within King Solomon's Temple.
