As part of their training, our dogs are taught a 'touch' cue. This cue prompts the dog to gently put their nose against their handler's hand. The cue is useful for redirecting a dog's attention and can be helpful in situations where the handler needs to direct their dog to move in a certain way, e.g. for veterinary checkups. This cue is also a good foundation for other training such as chin rests, behaviour interruption and meltdown alert. 🐶

Did you know... according to the National Autistic Society(2020), only 16% of autistic adults in the UK are in full-time paid employment, and only 22% are in some kind of paid work, despite the majority wanting work.

For many autistic individuals, work environments can be overwhelming and having the consistency and support of a DfA assistance dog by their side can help, opening up opportunities and enabling more community inclusion.

Phil is a dual assistance dog, having been trained by Dogs for Autism and our Assistance Dogs UK family member, Medical Detection Dogs. 🐾

He alerts Flic to oncoming Vestibular PoTS faints and supports her with autism-related tasks, such as crowd control and deep pressure therapy, and autism alerts which help prevent sensory overload.🐶

Assistance dogs like Phil are trained to perform specific tasks that help their partners manage the disabling aspects of their condition, enabling them to do the things they couldn’t do before. 🐾

Join Anais, an assistance dog trainer and canine welfare officer at Dogs for Autism, for a 'day in the life' 🐶

Anais and the rest of the DfA training team are currently training the next generation of DfA autism assistance dogs that are trained to mitigate some of the disabling impacts of autism and have a positive impact on the lives of their autistic partners. Empowering them to achieve their goals, improve access to their chosen communities and to enhance their emotional and physical wellbeing.🐾
