🕊️ Armistice Day – Faringdon Remembers 🕊️

Today marks Armistice Day, the anniversary of the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front in 1918. It is a day to honour the end of the First World War and to remember all those who gave their lives in service to our country.

At 11:00 hrs, on the 11th day of the 11th month, we will gather at Faringdon War Memorial and across the country for a two-minute silence. This shared moment of reflection allows us to pause, remember, and give thanks.

When silence falls and poppies bloom,
We stand in stillness, not in gloom.
For those who marched and did not return,
Our hearts, with gratitude, still burn.
Their legacy lives, their memory stays,
In quiet moments and solemn praise.

Please join us as we honour their sacrifice.

🇧 Remembrance Sunday – Faringdon 🇬🇧

This morning, our town came together in solemn unity to honour the fallen and reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom.

🕊️ From the parade at the Corn Exchange to the service at All Saints Church, the ceremony at the War Memorial, and the two-minute silence at 11am — every moment was marked by dignity, remembrance, and community spirit.

What a wonderful turnout. Your participation ensures that we continue to remember, together.

The Faringdon Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Faringdon Town Council, all representatives and organisations who laid wreaths, and the local community for your presence and support.

🇬🇧 Remembrance Sunday – Faringdon 🇬🇧

Etched into the wood of our War Memorial are the names of brave souls from Faringdon who gave their lives in the service of our country. From World War I and World War II, each name tells a story of courage, sacrifice, and love for home. Among them are familiar local surnames—Absalom, Barrett, Haynes, Morbey, and Tarr—representing families who bore the weight of loss so that future generations might live in peace. Today, we honour them not only as soldiers, but as sons, brothers, and friends whose memory lives on in our hearts and our town.

Today we gather in solemn tribute to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of all who have defended our freedoms.

🕤 0930 – Parade begins at the Corn Exchange
✝️ 1000 – Service at All Saints Church
🎖️ 1045 – Ceremony at the War Memorial
🕚 1100 – Two Minute Silence

Please join us as the community comes together to remember. Whether you’re marching, observing, or quietly reflecting, your presence helps keep their memory alive.

Lest we forget.

🕯️ The Kohima Epitaph — A Lasting Tribute

“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

These words, known as the Kohima Epitaph, are etched into the memorial at the Kohima War Cemetery in North-East India. They honour the soldiers who fell in the fierce battle of Kohima in 1944 — a turning point in the Burma Campaign of World War II.

Today, the epitaph stands as a timeless reminder of sacrifice, courage, and duty. It speaks not only of those who gave their lives in distant lands, but of all who have served and fallen in defence of freedom.

As we gather to remember, let us reflect on the meaning behind these words. They ask us to carry forward the legacy of those who gave everything — with gratitude, remembrance, and resolve.

Lest we forget.

🎺 The Last Post — A Moment of Reflection and Honour

At remembrance services across the country, the haunting notes of the Last Post mark a moment of stillness. It is not just a bugle call — it is a symbol of respect, sacrifice, and reflection.

The Last Post was originally used to signal the end of the day’s duties for soldiers. Today, it serves as a poignant tribute to those who gave their lives in service to our country. It invites us to pause, remember, and honour the fallen — not just in silence, but in gratitude.

As we gather in Faringdon and beyond this November, we invite you to join us in that moment. Whether at a service, at home, or simply in thought — let the Last Post remind us of the courage, duty, and legacy of those we remember.

🕯️ In Honour of the Unknown Warrior 🕯️

This Sunday, 9th November, the Faringdon community gathers to remember those who gave everything—and those whose names we may never know.

The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice. Buried on Armistice Day in 1920, this soldier represents all who fell in the Great War without recognition. His grave, filled with soil from the battlefields and sealed with black marble, reminds us that remembrance is not just for the known—but for the countless silent heroes.

💬 “They buried him among kings because he had done good toward God and toward his house.”

We invite you to join us for our Faringdon Remembrance Service:

📍 Sunday 9th November
• 0930 hrs – Parade departs from the Corn Exchange
• 1000 hrs – Service at All Saints Church, Faringdon
• 1045 hrs – Ceremony at the War Memorial

Whether you march, attend, or pause in quiet reflection, your presence honours their memory.
