The PUQE score - Sunday Support 🫶

If you’re experiencing nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, you or your healthcare provider might use the PUQE score—short for Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis—to understand how severe your symptoms are.

The PUQE score looks at three things over the past 24 hours:
🔸How long you’ve been nauseated each day
🔸How often you vomit
🔸How often you have retching or dry heaves

Scores are added together to give a total that helps classify symptoms as mild, moderate, or severe. This helps your care team decide on treatments, monitor progress, and know when extra support may be needed.

For anyone with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), the PUQE score can be a helpful way to communicate just how much the sickness is affecting daily life and also a useful tool to track your symptoms over time.

It’s important to remember that the PUQE score does not assess the emotional or mental health impact of nausea and vomiting—something that can be just as significant, so do be sure to communicate with your healthcare provider if you are struggling.

The International Conference on HG Returns to Bergen this week 🫂

PSS has been involved in the international HG research community since 2015 when four of our trustees attended the first International Colloquium on HG in Bergen, Norway.

Now, over 10 years later, we are excited to be going back to where it all started.

This year there will be a large contingent in attendance including trustees Dr Shazia Zafar and Dr Margaret O’Hara, plus a large number of our Medical Advisory Board including Prof Catherine Nelson-Piercy, Dr Melanie Nanna, Marie Mitchell and Suzanne Blythin.

Shazia, Catherine and Melanie will be presenting at the conference, continuing the tradition of at least one (usually more) PSS representative presenting at every international HG conference.

You can find out more about the conference on our blog https://ow.ly/Fua650Z10JJ

Today is International Hyperemesis Gravidarum Awareness Day! 💕📣

We recently wrote about the Renewed Women's Health Strategy, and within it, Action 54 which commits to end the postcode lottery for medicines in England within the next two years.

The fact that HG is specifically mentioned in the strategy shows that our communal voices are being heard, and we are being listened to.

At PSS, we will continue to support sufferers and their families. We will continue to educate healthcare professionals. We will continue to campaign for change.

We see you, we hear you, and we stand with you, today and always.

We at PSS are sorry to report that our founder, Trustee Dr Tony Barnie-Adshead, has recently died at the age of 92.
