Our Story
Fareham Heathens is a club with lots of history and tradition. Whilst the word “Heathen” is commonly assumed to have negative religious meaning this could not be far from the truth of the proud history and origins of our name. Originally the clubs name was just Heathens, the club was first formed in Locks Heath and at the time had a nomadic existence, with no permanent home. Very similar to the way NFL teams move from city to city carrying the name. The name was effectively derived from the Germanic use of the adjective ‘heide’ an old English word ‘Heathen’ which basically translated to ‘inhabiting open country’ or ‘country dweller who lives on the heath’. Later the club did find a permanent home at Cams Alders and effectively combined with a club that was an offshoot of Gosport & Fareham called Fareham RFC. The clubs combined both names not to lose either teams identity and to closely reflect the new location. Forming strong Ties with the local community and the identity Fareham Heathens Rugby Club was born in 1974. We continue to be a very community based club and offer Rugby as well as social activities to all age groups, abilities and genders, We retain pride in the our heritage and this continues to be reflected in our name. Former dwellers of the heath who have settled in Fareham. We are an RFU accredited team with the seal of approval, with over 150 senior members, 200 junior members and 50 ladies it shows the diversity of the club and the sport. Over the past few years we have been very fortunate to win some honours and our plan is to develop and attract players locally to emulate what we have achieved and what we want to achieve again for generations to come.
