An incredible donation which has meant families in hospital get a pizza at the weekend. The wards are busy so these are very much appreciated.

Sometimes, a little distraction can make a HUGE difference.

For some children, having a cannula put in can be a really frightening experience.

For Annie (our Operations Managers daughter) it would normally mean tears, screaming and needing Mum to hold her still.

But this time was different…

When Annie was in A&E at Queen Alexandra Hospital, the wonderful Zoe, one of the hospital’s play specialists, came to help.

She popped a VR headset on Annie, and suddenly, instead of focusing on the cannula, Annie was exploring an underwater world! 🐠

And the result? Not a single tear.

Annie didn’t even realise the cannula had gone in and told us she hadn’t felt a thing!

This is just one example of the incredible difference hospital play teams make every single day. They help children feel calmer, less frightened and more in control during what can be some really difficult moments.

As we celebrate Play in Hospital Week, we want to give a huge shout-out to Zoe and all the amazing play specialists and play teams who make hospital experiences a little less scary for children and their families 💛

For children facing months or even years of treatment, a Play Specialist can become one of the familiar faces who is there through it all; the blood tests, scans, chemotherapy, procedures and the difficult days in between.

In our latest podcast episode, Charlotte is joined by Chloe, a Play Specialist, to talk about the incredible role play teams have in children’s healthcare.

They talk about preparing children for procedures, preventing trauma, building trust, supporting families and what it means to become such an important part of a child’s hospital journey.

They also talk about the harder side of the role - supporting very poorly children, losing patients you have grown close to and finding the strength to be there for the next child who needs you.

For Sophie, her play team were an incredibly important part of her care. She believed passionately that children’s wards shouldn’t run without Play Specialists.

🎙️ Think a hospital Play Specialist just plays with children? Think again.

This week is Play in Hospital Week, so it feels like the perfect time to shine a light on just how important these teams are.

From preparing children for procedures and reducing anxiety, to providing distraction, building trust and helping make an incredibly scary environment feel a little more normal - play in hospital is so much more than toys and games.

In our next episode of the Sophie’s Legacy Podcast, Charlotte chats to Chloe, a Play Specialist, about what the role really involves and the difference the play team can make to a child’s hospital experience.

RIGHT THEN, COWBOYS & COWGIRLS… WHO’S READY TO BOOT SCOOT?!

🎙️ NEW PODCAST EPISODE - OUT NOW

Would you know what to look for if your child had cancer?

The difficult truth is that childhood cancer often doesn’t look the way people expect it to.

Children get headaches. They get tired. They get aches and pains, viruses, coughs and bugs.

And childhood cancers themselves are very different from the cancers we most commonly hear about in adults.

In today’s episode, Charlotte is joined by paediatric doctor Dr Sharna Shanmugavadivel, whose work has focused on improving the diagnosis of childhood cancer.

Dr Sharna explains three really important things for parents to look out for:

➡️ Symptoms that persist longer than expected
➡️ Symptoms beginning to occur in clusters
➡️ Symptoms that progress, change or worsen

And perhaps most importantly; that feeling that you know your child and something simply isn’t right.

Charlotte also talks about experiencing exactly that with Sophie: not knowing what was wrong and certainly not thinking it was cancer, but knowing that something wasn’t right and feeling that she wasn’t being heard.

They also discuss why children’s cancers are so different from adult cancers, diagnosis through A&E, research and funding, the Children and Young People’s Cancer Taskforce and the progress being made nationally.

This is one we would really love you to share.
