This evening the Go Fund Me for Spike reached £30,000 shortly before it closes. 🤍

Earlier tonight some of the CIC members met Spike down at the creek on the day we intended to celebrate the launch of Keewaydin. At that point we were about £400 away from the target. When we told him how close it was getting, he was quietly overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity that so many people have shown. 🙏🏻

Spike isn’t someone who seeks attention or stands up to make speeches. He is someone who simply gets on with the work and inspires those around him.

This £30,000 is not just a number. It represents hundreds of people who have stepped forward to help him begin again.

From all of us at Sailors Creek CIC, and on behalf of Spike — thank you.

Tonight feels like a turning point.

After a long day of working clearing and sorting on Keewaydin everyone gathered together on Gleaner for a shared lunch. As they always have.

Community. Friendship. Looking after one another.

Thanks to all of you, the fundraiser for Spike has now reached £29,435.

We close it later today, the day we were due to refloat Keewaydin.

If you’ve been meaning to contribute, this is the final push, it’s just £500 to reach £30,000.

Thank you to everyone who has helped Spike take the first steps toward rebuilding a new future.

Yesterday the sun finally returned to the creek, and for the first time in a while it felt like we could see a little light on the horizon.

The last two weeks at Sailors Creek have been challenging.

But we are incredibly proud of the Sailors Creek and Keewaydin community.

Work continues to make what remains of Keewaydin safe, but amongst that work there have also been moments worth celebrating.

New berth holders moving in.
Access walkways created from upcycled mussel tubes.
A cleaner, calmer creek.
And the first real signs of spring.

Thank you to everyone who has helped, supported and stood with us over these past two weeks.

And thank you to everyone who has supported the fundraiser for Spike, which closes this week. The kindness shown has been extraordinary.

Step by step, we move forward together.

Statement from the Directors of Sailors Creek CIC

We are devastated to confirm that Keewaydin, the 1913 Lowestoft wooden trawler that has been under restoration at Sailors Creek, was destroyed by fire today.

Emergency services attended promptly, and we are profoundly grateful for their swift response. We can confirm that no one was seriously injured.

Keewaydin has been at the heart of an extensive two-year restoration led by master shipwright Spike Davies, supported by an extraordinary community of volunteers, donors and well-wishers. With her launch just two weeks away, this loss is deeply felt by everyone involved and by the many people who have followed her journey.

The fire is understood to have been an accident. The circumstances are being reviewed, and we are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities. We will not be making further comment until more information is available.

We respectfully ask members of the public not to visit the site. The area is unsafe and access is restricted while assessments are carried out. Your cooperation will help ensure the safety of everyone and allow necessary work to take place.

We would like to thank our community for the overwhelming messages of support already received. Right now, our focus is on supporting those most directly affected and taking the necessary next steps.

Further updates will be shared in due course through our official channels.

🌊 Sailors Creek CIC – Director (2-Year Voluntary Post)

We’re looking to welcome an enthusiastic and insightful Director to join our team 💫

Our board meets monthly to shape and guide the future of Sailors Creek CIC and its 180+ members. While the focus is on governance, our Directors also get involved on the ground and on the river, whenever time allows.

⚓️ About Sailors Creek CIC

We’re a local, member-led organisation managing creekside spaces, a forest garden, and several commercial moorings.

To date we’ve cleared over 50 tons of debris from the creek, and continue to improve the site’s sustainability, biodiversity, and community connections.

🌿 We’d love to hear from you if you have experience or passion in:

• Funding, finance & radical governance structures
• Social media, photography & film
• Arts-based community projects & performance
• Waterways, regenerative farming & ecology
• Sustainability & innovation with waste
• Community building & outreach

💚 What we offer:
This is a voluntary position. Each Director receives honorary life membership and can accumulate shares through our sweat-credit system.

📩 How to apply:
Email [email protected] with a brief note about your interest and experience (and anything else you’d like to share) by midday, Sunday 30th November 2025.

😮 This evening’s sunny view of Sailors Creek’s foreshore feels a world away from how it looked back in 2021—cluttered, neglected, and strewn with derelict vessels filled with pollution.

It’s been a huge effort from volunteers & community members to bring the creek ever closer to the way it’s so fondly remembered —and it’s all part of a bigger issue highlighted in Practical Boat Owner this month (link in bio).

👉 The article explores the growing problem of abandoned and end-of-life boats across the UK—particularly ageing fibreglass vessels that are often dumped and left to rot on mudflats, creeks, and harbours.
👉 Many of these boats leak oil, paint, and diesel, shedding microplastics and harming fragile marine environments.
👉 The article also highlights how expensive and difficult it is to responsibly dispose of old boats—costs can run to thousands, with limited recycling options available.

Without national schemes, the burden of removing these wrecks often falls on community groups, volunteers, and harbour authorities.

Through inspiring projects like Wreck Free Fal & Helford and Clean Ocean Sailing, old boats are being removed, reused, and reimagined. And now, thanks to the inaugural meeting hosted by earlier in the year, there’s a dialogue between marine and community organisations about how to tackle the tidal wave of EOL vessels both locally and nationally.

We’re proud of this shared effort—and proud to see Sailors Creek flourish again 💪🌊

🌿Fresh flax leaves emerging – a sign of renewal, resilience, and the strength of nature.

Just like the work we’re doing in the creek, flax has long been a part of our maritime heritage.

🛶 Strong as a Sailor’s Rope – Historically, flax was used to make ropes and sailcloth, keeping ships strong against the wild Atlantic.

🌍 Naturally Biodegradable – Unlike modern synthetics, flax breaks down naturally, leaving no trace behind—exactly the kind of future we want for Sailors Creek.

🌱 Regenerative Power – Flax improves soil health, prevents erosion, and needs barely any water to thrive. A perfect example of how nature already holds the answers to sustainability.
