With the higher than usual temperatures, take a minute to check in on older neighbours and family members. The British Red Cross have put together a checklist of symptoms for both heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

With the temperature heating up this week, please check on your vulnerable and elderly neighbours 🥰

🍲💛 Could you share an extra portion and make a real difference to an older person in your community? 💛🍲
We’re looking for volunteer cooks to join our local Meal Makers project.

Meal Makers connects people who love to cook with an older neighbour who would benefit from a home-cooked meal and some friendly company. Volunteers simply prepare an extra portion of food to share with a Diner, whether that’s sitting down together for a blether or dropping off a meal.

Together, we’re helping tackle loneliness and malnutrition while building connections within local communities. ❤️

Please share this post so we can reach as many people as possible.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the power of volunteering 💚

Giving your time to help others doesn’t just make a difference in your community — it can have a positive impact on your own mental health too. Volunteering can boost mood, reduce feelings of isolation, and give a real sense of purpose and connection.

At Food Train, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s delivering shopping, offering a friendly chat, or supporting someone to stay independent at home, every small act of kindness adds up to something bigger.

And it’s not just the people we support who benefit — our volunteers often tell us how much they gain in confidence, wellbeing, and friendship through being involved.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to support your mental health while helping others, volunteering could be a great place to start. Contact us at [email protected] or call 01324 374 144

Join us this Mental Health Awareness Week and be part of something that truly makes a difference 💚

Mental Health Awareness Week is a reminder that no one should have to face tough times alone 💚

For many people, especially those who are older or living alone, loneliness can have a huge impact on mental health. Something as simple as a regular friendly chat can make all the difference.

That’s where 1:1 befriending comes in. Having someone who listens, checks in, and shares a bit of time can help reduce isolation, lift mood, and create a sense of connection and belonging.

At Food Train, we’re here to support people to live well at home. Alongside practical help like grocery deliveries, our befriending services offer meaningful companionship — whether that’s a weekly phone call or a friendly visit. It’s about more than food; it’s about people, connection, and care.

If you or someone you know could benefit from a little extra support, or if you’d like to volunteer your time to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.

Because sometimes, the smallest act of kindness can have the biggest impact 💚

🌟 Connection is the Best Medicine: Mental Health Awareness Week 2026

We all know that a quick chat over a cuppa can brighten a dull afternoon, but for older adults, social interaction isn't just a "nice-to-have"—it is a lifeline for mental health.
As we age, our social circles can sometimes naturally shrink. Loneliness isn't just a feeling; it can take a real toll on our emotional and physical well-being. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re highlighting the power of staying connected and how getting out and about can transform your outlook.

Why Staying Social Matters:
• Boosts Mood: Positive social interactions release endorphins that help fight off feelings of depression and anxiety.
• Keeps the Mind Sharp: Engaging in conversation and new environments provides vital cognitive stimulation.
• A Sense of Belonging: Being part of a community reminds us that we are valued, heard, and never alone.

🚌 Rediscover Your Community with Food Train Outings
At Food Train, we believe that everyone deserves a vibrant social life. Our Food Train Friends and outing services are designed to help you get back out into the world with confidence.
• Group Outings: From trips to local garden centres to lunch at a favourite café, our outings are the perfect way to see new sights.
• Safe & Supported: Our wonderful volunteers provide transport and a helping hand, so you can focus on enjoying the day without the stress of travel.
• New Friendships: Our outings bring people together. You’re not just going on a trip; you’re meeting neighbours and making new friends who share your interests.

"A day out with Food Train isn't just about the destination—it's about the laughs in the minibus and the stories shared over lunch."

Don't let the four walls close in. If you or a loved one is feeling isolated, let us help you get back on the "right track." 🚂

🍎 Eating Well to Feel Well: Mental Health Awareness Week 2026

When we talk about mental health, we often focus on what’s on our minds—but what’s on our plates matters just as much!
As we get older, the connection between nutrition and emotional well-being grows even stronger. Good food isn't just fuel for the body; it’s vital "brain food" that can help stabilize mood, improve memory, and keep us feeling resilient.

Why Nutrition Matters for Our Mental Health:
• The Gut-Brain Connection: A healthy gut often leads to a happier mind. Nutrient-rich foods help produce the "feel-good" chemicals like serotonin.
• Energy & Focus: Balanced meals prevent the blood sugar crashes that can leave us feeling anxious or low on energy.
• Staying Connected: Food is social! Sharing a meal or a chat about a recipe is one of the best ways to combat loneliness.

🚂 How Food Train Can Help
We know that as we age, grocery shopping and meal prep can sometimes feel like a mountain to climb. That’s where Food Train comes in! We’re here to ensure that no older person in our community has to struggle with access to fresh, nutritious food.

• Grocery Deliveries: Our volunteers do the heavy lifting, delivering the fresh ingredients you love right to your door and can even put the shopping away if needed.
• Meal Makers: We connect people with local cooks for a delicious home-cooked meal and a friendly catch-up.
• Friendly Faces: Beyond the food, our volunteers provide vital social connection—a quick chat can make a world of difference to your day.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s prioritize nourishment.

💐 Mother’s Day Appeal 💐

Thanks to the incredible support from communities across Scotland, we’ve raised over £3,300 and welcomed 82 new supporters to Food Train 💛

This generosity means we can continue delivering vital services to older people—helping them stay nourished, connected, and independent at home, so that every older person in Scotland can thrive.

Our appeal also reached more people than ever before. We received new enquiries about our services, connected with people interested in volunteering, and shared Edna’s story more widely—highlighting the real impact of our work.

Whether you donated, shared the appeal, or support Food Train in other ways—thank you. Your support truly makes a difference and helps us reach more older people who need us.
