What We Wash Away

🌊🌱 New publication out now!

Everyday personal care products don’t just stop at the bathroom drain β€” many end up in our coastal waters. Our latest study explores how pollution from personal care products affects the health of seagrass, a vital habitat for marine life and coastal protection. Understanding these impacts is key to protecting seagrass meadows and the ecosystems they support.

This work was funded by the The University of Edinburgh Marine Systems and Policies programme and St Abbs Marine Station. Big thanks to Project Seagrass and Seawilding for their support and expert advice that made our research possible!

The Marine Station has been going through some changes in the last few months. Funding challenges have meant that we have had to bid sad farewells to some friends and colleagues. But the Marine Station is not closing down, it is in the process of evolving a new way of working. In the future, in addition to carrying out marine research, we will be running a dive school specialising in training scientific divers; and opening up part of the facility to the public. We have recently heard that we have secured funding from the Coastal Communities Fund to convert the building containing our 100,000 litre mesocosm into a public aquarium showcasing some of the amazing marine life that we have in the inshore waters off the Berwickshire Coast. Watch this space for progress reports!

🐟 ⚑️We’re speaking at and OCEaN – Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature's second mitigation measures webinar, diving into how electromagnetic fields interact with a key fish species in the North Sea!

This webinar will spotlight the results of the FlatEMF project, which we were proud to contribute to. Beginning in 2023, FlatEMF has worked to address a key knowledge gap: how and if electromagnetic fields created by offshore wind and grid infrastructure affect commercial flatfish species.

We’ll be discussing the scientific investigations which took place at St Abbs Marine Station (including how flatfish interact with offshore cables), how to measure EMF from cables, and potential mitigation measures, as well as seabed survey findings from Wageningen Marine Research.

Join us on 1 October to hear from:
πŸ”Ή Annemiek Hermans – Marine ecologist, TenneT TSO
πŸ”Ή Evripidis Karatsivos – Director (Products Engineering), NKT
πŸ”Ή Erica Chapman – Senior researcher, St Abbs Marine Station
