🌊💙 World Ocean Day 2026 💙🌊

What a fantastic morning celebrating our connection to the sea while giving something back to the coastline we all love.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, visitors and volunteers, we raised £100.75 through the sale of equipment and cakes, with all funds going to support the Berwickshire Marine Reserve.

♻️ 13.5kg of equipment repurposed
🗑️ 6kg of micro-rubbish collected from the shoreline
💙 Countless conversations about protecting our oceans for future generations

It was wonderful to welcome wild swimmers who where here on holiday, visitors from Liverpool and Bradford, and they heard about the event through Facebook and made the journey to join us.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers who baked cakes, helped set up, packed away, and most importantly, took the time to have positive conversations with people throughout the morning. Those small conversations create ripples of change that spread far beyond a single event.

🌊 Take 3 for the Sea 🌊

One simple action we can all take whenever we visit the beach is to pick up three pieces of litter before we leave. If every beach visitor did the same, imagine the difference we could make collectively to our oceans, seas and shorelines. Small actions, repeated by many people, create lasting change.

Together we are proving that local action can make a real difference to our oceans, our coastline and our community.

Every piece of litter removed, every item repurposed and every conversation shared helps create a healthier ocean for generations to come.

What a privilege it was to attend the Volunteer Celebration Event at Duns Volunteer Hall held by Borders Community Action

It was lovely to have the opportunity to share stories and experiences.

More importantly to celebrate all of our achievements gained only through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.

It wasn't until we were talking with others that we realised just how much we've achieved for the benefit of the community so far this year:

•Volunteer Education&Employability...new swim coaches & water rescuers, 16hr outdoor first aid programme, forest leader, hygiene certificates
•Swim coaching inc. subsidised places
•Water safety on the bay day
•Procuring safety kit for all to use eg yellow torpedos, handing out free safety kit
•Mental health and wellbeing programme
•Second wave swim & recycling events
•Defib & Fire Safety awareness evenings
•Beach cleans
•Walk and waffle events
•Salt and Soul Stroll events
•Moon and Solstice swims

All backed up by huge amounts of wide ranging day to day admin:
•Community shed upkeep...new fire blanket & 1st aid kit, noticeboard, painting, hedge&grass cutting, shed insurance
•Weekly, monthly & event refreshments
•Website & calendar & FB info and advertising
•Partnership negotiations & networking, media engagement, tourism promotion
•Merch design, trialling for form, fit & function within community, ordering, distribution inc subsidies
•Sorting & labelling...raffles, tombola, second wave swim donations
•Event set up & take down
•website booking system, processes, policies, procedures, business&activity insurance...

the list really is endless

and there's more to come with our upcoming Outdoor Walking 7 week programme & our usual trips and visits etc.

So thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to all of you who volunteer your time so readily to make it appear seamlessly easy to those looking in from the outside. You really have and are doing Berwickshire proud

🌟 Volunteers' Week 2026 🌟

This Volunteers' Week, we want to shine a light on the incredible people who make Coldingham Brave Bayers what it is.

Behind every swim, wellbeing session, community event, fundraiser and water safety initiative is a team of volunteers giving their time, energy, skills and kindness to support others.

From setting up and packing away, maintaining equipment and the shed, baking hundreds of cakes, making teas and coffees, welcoming new faces, supporting participants, helping with social media, giving TV and radio interviews, writing funding applications, coordinating events and serving as directors — every contribution matters.

But volunteering isn't just about the things people see.

It's the conversations about Coldingham Brave Bayers when we're not in the room. It's sharing our posts on social media, recommending us to a friend who might benefit, encouraging someone to take that first step through the door, talking about the impact of our work in the community, and being an ambassador for our values wherever you go.

It's checking in on someone who hasn't been to a session for a while, celebrating another person's achievement, offering a lift, lending a hand, or simply creating a welcoming smile on a difficult day.

These small acts create a ripple effect that reaches much further than any of us can measure.

One of our volunteers, Amy, shares what volunteering means to her:

*"Volunteering with Coldingham Brave Bayers is my way of giving something back to a community that has benefited me so much. Being part of the group has had a hugely positive impact on my life, helping me build confidence, connecting with people and enjoy the benefits of spending time outdoors.*

"Through my volunteering, I have also had access to valuable training and development opportunities, allowing me to learn new skills and grow both personally and professionally. Volunteering enables me to support others while contributing to a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages wellbeing, connection, personal achievement, whilst having fun and staying safe! 🛟

It is rewarding to play a role in helping others experience the same sense of belonging, confidence, and enjoyment that I have gained from being part of the Brave Bayers community."

Amy's story reflects the experience of so many within our community. Volunteering is not just about giving back — it's about growing in confidence, learning new skills, building friendships and creating opportunities for others.

We've watched volunteers and participants alike find their voice, grow in confidence, develop new skills, take on leadership roles, speak on radio and television, lead activities, support others and achieve things they never thought possible.

Whether you've volunteered for one event or have been with us since the beginning, thank you. Your time creates ripples that reach far beyond the bay, helping people improve their wellbeing, build resilience, feel connected and find a sense of belonging.

Without volunteers, there is no village. Without a village, there is no community.

From all of us at Coldingham Brave Bayers — thank you for every cake baked, every chair lifted, every conversation shared, every social media post liked and shared, every encouraging word spoken, and every hour given in service of others. We see you, we hear you, and we appreciate you. 💙🌊

🌊 Think twice before stepping into floodwater 🌊
Have you ever wondered why people are advised not to walk through even shallow floodwater?
The reason is simple — you never know what’s hidden beneath that murky, brown water. From harmful chemicals and sewage to debris and sharp objects, floodwater can pose serious risks to your health and safety.
⬇️ Take a look at our infographic below to see some of the main pollutants that can be present.
Stay safe and avoid unnecessary risks — it’s always better to keep out of floodwater. ✅

🌩️ Safety Notice for Coldingham Bay – Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain & Water Quality
A reminder for everyone who enjoys swimming, paddling or spending time in the water at Coldingham Bay:
When thunder, lightning or sudden heavy downpours are forecast, it’s important to stay out of the sea for your own safety and wellbeing.

⚡ Why thunderstorms and open water don’t mix
Water conducts electricity extremely well — if lightning strikes the sea, the current can travel across the surface.
Swimmers become the highest point in the water, increasing the risk of being struck.
Storms reduce visibility for both swimmers and safety cover.
Wind, waves and currents can change quickly, making conditions unpredictable.
National guidance is simple:
If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning — leave the water immediately.
🌧️ How sudden downpours affect water quality
Intense rainfall in a short period can overwhelm local drainage systems. When this happens:
Runoff from roads, fields and farmland flows straight into the sea, carrying bacteria and pollutants.
Drainage and sewage systems can overflow, especially during flash downpours.
Water quality can drop rapidly, even when the sea looks clear.
These short‑term pollution spikes can increase the risk of stomach bugs, ear infections and skin irritation.
For these reasons, it’s safest to avoid entering the water during or immediately after thunderstorms and heavy rain.
📱 Check water quality before you swim

Coldingham Bay is a beautiful place to swim and explore and by understanding how weather affects safety and water quality, we can all enjoy it responsibly.

🌊 World Oceans Day – Sunday 7 June
One Ocean, One Climate, One Future — Together

We’re getting ready for our Coldingham World Oceans Day celebrations — and this week we’re inviting the community to drop off any used wild‑swimming or outdoor gear that can be reused, repaired or repurposed as part of our "Second Wave Swims project."

📍 Drop‑off point: Thorn Cottage (opposite the Spar, Coldingham High Street)
📅 All this week
👕 Adults’ and children’s items welcome

If you’re having a clear‑out, this is the perfect time. Wetsuits, gloves, boots, tow floats, robes, goggles, dry bags — anything still usable or repairable — will be given a second life instead of ending up in landfill. All funds raised go directly to supporting the Berwickshire Marine Reserve.

The Berwickshire Marine Reserve protects one of the most biodiverse stretches of coastline in the UK. Every penny raised helps safeguard our local seas, support community education, and keep our coastline thriving for future generations.

🌊💙 A huge thank you to all of our incredible volunteers and supporters who helped make today's Water Safety on the Bay such a success.

With nearly 500 people attending, there were a lot of teas, coffees, cakes, conversations and smiles shared throughout the day! None of this would have been possible without the many people who gave their time, energy and support behind the scenes and on the day itself.

Without a village, there is no community. Today showed exactly what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. Thank you for helping create a day filled with learning, connection, fun and safer experiences around the water.

We are truly grateful to every single person who played a part. 💙🌊☕🍰🙏
