the Deaf Academy

the Deaf Academy The Deaf Academy is a non-maintained special school and college for deaf children and young people aged 5–25. We are a charity and welcome fundraising.

We have been providing education for deaf young people since 1826. We teach children from age 5 – 25 years, using a bilingual environment of British Sign Language (BSL) and English to provide specialist education and care tailored to individual needs. We inspire deaf children to believe in themselves as they journey towards independence and have a strong reputation for engaging students failed els

ewhere in education. The Academy welcomes children from across the UK so the majority of our students use our residential care facilities. We work closely with parents and guardians and our children’s home is able to provide year round care for those that need it. As a non-maintained special school, our pupils are funded by their home local authority.

Huge congratulations to our incredible Deaf Academy students!

Our talented college students (aged 17–18) have won the Young Enterprise South West Inspiring Company Award with their innovative and inclusive comic book- and they’re now heading to the national finals in Cardiff on 3 June!

The team created a unique adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk, inspired by their own experiences as Deaf young people. Each page includes QR codes linking to British Sign Language (BSL) translations, making the story accessible for Deaf children.

From writing and design to marketing, finance and leadership, students ran the project as their own company showing outstanding creativity, teamwork and determination.

We were also honoured that HRH The Princess Royal took the time to meet the team and learn more about their work during our recent 200th anniversary celebrations.

As student Grace shared: "We wanted to make a book that was accessible for Deaf children."

The comic is now available to buy for £5 on our website -helping make storytelling more accessible for all.

Please join us in celebrating their success and wishing them the best at nationals!

As we reflect on our 200th anniversary ‘Deaf Festival’ celebrations, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this very special event possible.

We simply couldn’t have delivered such a memorable day without the incredible support of our whole community, supporters and partners. From the bees that produced the honey and the posy gifted to Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, to the inspiring workshops and change makers panel on offer – every contribution played a part, and we are so grateful.

The feedback our Charity has received, both from within our community and beyond, has been truly uplifting. It highlights not only the importance of our mission, but also the lasting impact of our work - helping Deaf young people with additional needs to thrive.

We are also thankful for the great regional and national media coverage of the celebrations, including features in the Exmouth Journal, HELLO! Magazine, Express & Echo, and Western Daily Press. This has helped shine a wider spotlight on Deaf education and inclusion.

During her visit, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal recognised the Academy’s influence, noting that it continues to “set standards for others to follow” - a sentiment we are incredibly proud of.

A truly special day for the Deaf Academy!

We were honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal today as we celebrated our 200th anniversary- marking two centuries of empowering Deaf young people.

What an incredible way to mark our bicentenary during National Deaf Awareness Week!

The Princess Royal engaged fantastically with students and staff and showed a genuine interest in learning about life at the Academy.

Alongside the The Royal Family visit, we welcomed leaders from across the Deaf community for a powerful ‘change-makers’ panel — discussing the future of Deaf education and inclusion.

From inspiring conversations with our students to enjoying creative sessions including BSL poetry, drumming and art, it was a day full of energy, pride and possibility.

The amazing day was supported by Lord Lieutenant of Devon and kindly sponsored by HSBC.

Our students were at the heart of it all - sharing their experiences, talents and aspirations for the future.

Here’s to the next 200 years of breaking barriers and building brighter futures.
