Exe Estuary Management Partnership For People . For Wildlife .

For The Future

A collaboration of partners and stakeholders, with the aim of sustainability protecting and enhancing the Exe Estuary for wildlife, user groups, and the public. The Exe Estuary Management Partnership (EEMP) coordinates collaborative estuary management across local authorities, environmental organisations, and community stakeholders. We work to protect the Exe’s unique wildlife and support sustainable recreation, by communicating and advocating the valuable work of our partners and stakeholders. Our work ensures that the estuary remains a thriving space for both nature and people:
- Supporting wildlife conservation and habitat protection
- Aiding monitoring and research
- Promoting sustainable recreation guidance
- Communicating policy and management coordination
- Initiating community engagement and volunteering
- Providing educational sessions and awareness campaigns
- Delivering estuary wide partnership projects

Wildlife Spotlight: Brent Goose

✨ One of the Exe Estuary's most important winter visitors, arriving from the Arctic each year to feed on the rich coastal habitats that make this estuary so special. ✨

🌍 Did you know?
The brent goose is the most coastal of the UK's geese, feeding mainly on eelgrass and seaweed in estuaries, saltmarshes, and other coastal habitats.

🔎 Appearance:
• Grey-brown back
• Black head and neck
• Distinctive small white patch on the side of the neck
• Compact, dark-bodied goose

🍽 Diet:
• Eelgrass
• Invertebrates
• Seaweed and other coastal vegetation

⏳ Average lifespan:
• Up to 11 years

🏞 Habitat:
• Marine environments
• Coastal habitats
• Intertidal areas
• Farmland

📍 Location:
• Breeds in northern Russia and Siberia
• Migrates thousands of miles to winter around the coasts of East Anglia and southern England
• Commonly found feeding and roosting on estuaries, including the Exe Estuary

✔️ Help protect brent geese:
• Keep a respectful distance from feeding and roosting birds
• Take only photographs and leave no trace
• Dispose of litter responsibly and keep dogs under control where requested

Protecting these feeding areas like the eelgrass gives them the opportunity to rest, refuel, and prepare for the journey north once spring returns. 💙

Special Wildlife Spotlight: Atlantic Salmon 🐟

✨Celebrating the Salmon Run happening on the 19th of September with this weeks wildlife spotlight!✨

🌊Atlantic salmon are one of the UK's most iconic migratory fish, spending much of their lives at sea before returning to the rivers where they were born to breed. 🌊

🔎 Did you know?
Atlantic salmon can leap more than three metres into the air, helping them clear waterfalls, weirs and other obstacles on their journey upstream to spawn!

🐟 Appearance:
• Silvery body with a few dark spots along the back
• May develop a pinkish flush to the belly
• Mature males can develop a distinctive hooked lower jaw during the breeding season

🍽 Diet:
• Small fish
• Invertebrates

⏳ Average lifespan:
• Around 5 years

🌍 Habitat:
• Marine and freshwater environments
• Spend most of their lives at sea before returning to rivers to breed

📍 Location:
• Found in rivers across Wales, Scotland, and North and South West England
• Migratory fish that travel between the ocean and freshwater rivers

✔️ Help protect Atlantic salmon:
• Salmon fishing is prohibited in the Exe Estuary and River from 1 October to 13 February
• Atlantic salmon are a UK Priority Species, and anglers are encouraged not to target them to support conservation efforts

Protecting Atlantic salmon helps support healthy river and estuarine ecosystems. 💙

o Transit Shed, Exeter Quay, (10am - 12.30pm) — by the Custom House
o Dulverton, Exmoor Lawns (3pm - 7pm) — by the River Barle

Wildlife Spotlight: Limpet 🐚

🌊Limpets are a familiar sight on rocky shores around the UK, playing an important role in coastal ecosystems 🌊

🔎 Did you know?
After moving around rocks to feed when the tide is in, limpets follow their own mucus trail back to the exact same spot when the tide goes out!

🐚 Appearance:
• Conical, cone-shaped shell
• Colour varies from grey and brown to black, depending on the species
• Come in a range of sizes

🍽 Diet:
• Algae
• Detritus

⏳ Average lifespan:
• 10 to 20 years

🌍 Habitat:
• Marine environments
• Coastal and intertidal zones
• Rockpools and rocky shores

📍 Location:
• Found on rocky shores around the UK coastline

✔️ Responsible wildlife observation helps protect this species:
• Do not remove limpets attached to rocks, as this can damage the muscles they use to stay firmly in place
• When rock pooling, leave everything as you found it
• Take care not to disturb animals and habitats while exploring the shoreline

These small shellfish may seem unassuming, but they're perfectly adapted to life in one of the coast's toughest environments! 💙
