"How it started... How it's going!"

Back in 2024, as part of our "NHS 76th Blooming Birthday" celebrations, the South Western Ambulance Charity provided funding to Ambulance Stations to enhance their outdoor spaces.

The benefits of having somewhere outdoors to recalibrate and decompress during well-deserved rest breaks can't be underestimated.

Thank you to the team at Bodmin station who have shared photos with us as their garden area has become more established over the years.

And our thanks to NHS Charities Together for providing grant funding to help make this happen.

"I think it was a great investment from the charity to invest in outdoor engagement and nature to boost happiness." (Apprentice Paramedic - Bodmin)

In 2025, we were fortunate to receive a £20,000 grant from the amazing team at Nationwide UK and last Wednesday we were delighted to visit the Nationwide HQ in Swindon to show how the money has been used. Thanks to significant contributions such as this, we were able to purchase and equip a dedicated Community Response Vehicle for use by Community First Responder (CFR) volunteers operating across Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW). In addition, a full CFR kit was purchased to enable our volunteers to serve more patients in the Devizes & Melksham area.

On Wednesday 4th June, Chris Jones (South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust CFR) along with several Nationwide colleagues generously used one of their volunteering days to raise awareness of the importance of bystander CPR and defibrillation in cases of out of hospital cardiac arrest. The day, held at Nationwide’s HQ in Swindon, not only helped teach colleagues life-saving skills but also raised an incredible £683 to support the work of the South Western Ambulance Charity!

A huge thank you to Chris who facilitated the grant application on behalf of our Charity and to the team at Nationwide for your continued support, helping us to work alongside the Ambulance Service and communities in the South West to enhance care and support for patients in critical moments.

This we want to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has donated or awarded us a grant to our Community Response Vehicle Appeal. YOu have enabled us to buy, convert and fully equip dedicated Community Response Vehicles for volunteer Community First Responders (CFRs) across the South West.

13 cars have already been funded with fundraising still active to secure the 14th and final car. This will ensure every Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust operational county area has access to 2 cars for volunteer CFRs to use to support patients.

Donations to help fund the final car can be made at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/crv-south-west

Congratulations to Kelly Saunders, Deputy Head of Ambulance Vehicle Preparation (AVP) at South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust , for completing the Great West Run in extraordinary heat. She and SWASFT CEO John Martin both completed the half marathon course in support of our charity, raising over £500 in total, which is brilliant.

Kelly is pictured here with her husband who also ran it. Kelly said; "... it was a great experience with so many people despite the heat coming out to line the course to cheer everyone on! That helped enormously."

Thank you to both Kelly and John for all your efforts during the heatwave 🙏😎💚

Just before the spring weather turned into a heatwave, a group of intrepid staff from EX2 Group invited some equally adventurous staff from South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) Estates Team to join them on a Snowdon Sunrise Challenge to raise funds for South Western Ambulance Charity.

Setting off at around 1am for their 7 hour and 15km hike, they navigated through the dark and successfully reached the summit by sunrise – to be greeted with a very foggy view!

Thanks to their endurance and lots of support from partners, suppliers, friends and family, they have raised a fantastic £2,460 to date.

Adam Carter, Emily Bullock and Michael Gittings represented SWASFT. They've been working with EX2 Group on various electrical infrastructure upgrade projects including EV, solar and heat pumps.

According to Environmental & Sustainability Manager Emily, "We expect to save 43 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and reduce our carbon footprint from gas and oil heating by 8% (across the whole estate compared to 2023/24)."

Charity Fundraising Manager, Louise Walsh said, “We are really grateful to EX2 Group for their amazing support and for involving some of our staff in the adventure too. Well done to all for completing such a tough challenge!”.
