Little Valley Animal Shelter, Exeter (RSPCA) Little Valley is a self-funded branch of the RSPCA based in Exeter, Devon. Reg Charity No: 205154

Little Valley Animal Shelter is owned and run by the South, East and West Devon Branch of the RSPCA and is located on the outskirts of Exeter. The Shelter, founded in 1991, supports the work of local RSPCA inspectors by caring for and rehoming over 1000 of the neediest animals from our local area every year. Little Valley’s running costs are in the region of £10,000 per week and, although we are proud to be affiliated with the RSPCA, sadly we receive no automatic funding and we therefore have to rely totally on local support from our own community to fund our vital animal welfare work. All animals stay at the Shelter until they are adopted into caring, responsible homes. A homechecker visits every prospective owner and follow-up checks are made to ensure the animal is well and settled. The Shelter can accept a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, aviary birds, farm animals and equines. We also hold wildlife, pending their transfer to RSPCA West Hatch in Taunton. Animals are only put to sleep on veterinary advice or because of incurable behavioural problems.

Calling all Labrador lovers! 🖤🐶

This Adoptober, meet Ruby – our gorgeous 8-year-old Labrador who is looking for a new home to call her own.

Ruby is fun, affectionate and always ready for an adventure. She'd love a home where she can enjoy interesting walks with plenty of opportunities to sniff, play and explore – before heading home to a comfy spot for some well-earned fuss and attention. 💙

She's a clever girl too! Ruby loves a treat, is highly trainable and keen to learn… although her new family will need to help her continue working on losing a few of those extra Labrador pounds! 😄

Ruby isn't used to being left alone, so she's looking for a home where she'll have company for most of the day while she gradually learns that being on her own is OK. She'd prefer to be the only dog, can't live with cats, but could potentially live with gentle older children.

This Adoptober is all about giving rescued animals the fresh start they deserve.

🐾 Animal Road Accident Awareness Day – 10 October

Today we're supporting Animal Road Accident Awareness Day – a reminder to look out for animals while we're on the road and to know what to do if an accident sadly happens.

CatsMatter estimates that around 230,000 cats are hit by vehicles on UK roads every year. And as the days get shorter, visibility becomes even more important – road traffic accidents involving cats are more likely to happen after dark.

🚗 Three simple things drivers can do:

🐱 Slow down and stay alert – particularly on residential roads and around parked cars where cats can appear suddenly.

🌙 Take extra care at dusk, dawn and after dark – cats are naturally more active around these times and can be much harder to spot.

👀 If you see a cat near the road, expect the unexpected – reduce your speed and give it plenty of space. A frightened cat may suddenly run across your path rather than away from it.

And if you do hit a cat, please don't just drive away. 😔 Don't be 'that' person. Accidents happen but how you respond speaks volume about your true character.

🛑 First, make sure it is safe for you to stop without putting yourself or other road users in danger. If the cat is injured, it needs veterinary attention as quickly as possible – even if it appears to be OK or runs away after the collision.

🌈 Although there is currently no legal requirement in the UK to report a collision with a cat to the police, doing what you can to get an injured cat help or to identify its owner, if it has sadly died, could make an enormous difference.

Meet Mowgli, our lively one-year-old explorer!
Mowgli loves playing, investigating his surroundings and getting outside to burn off some of that youthful energy. Once he's finished adventuring, he's more than happy to enjoy some fuss from his favourite humans.

He can sometimes get a little overstimulated, so he's looking for an understanding home that can recognise when he needs some space. He'll also need to be the only cat in his new home. RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter

Inbetweener cats looking for new place to call home!

Firstly, what is an ‘Inbetweener’ cat?
An Inbetweener cat is a cat that falls somewhere between a pet cat and a feral cat. They can’t comfortably live as a traditional pet cat but also aren’t able to fend entirely for themselves outdoors. Not all cats dream of being a lap cat… and that’s ok!

These cats may become more social over time, or they may always be more independent. Either way, they will be grateful to have patient owners, who appreciate them for who they are. In return, they should provide you with some pest control!

They are looking for either:
• Outdoor homes: this could be a farm, smallholding, rural property, stables etc. These cats would start off in a safe, sheltered outdoor area where they are provided with basic care and loved from afar.
• ‘Hands-off’ households: Quiet, adult only homes with a room for the cat to start off in. This would need to be a room with little foot traffic, so the cat isn’t disturbed too often. Once acclimatised, the cat would need constant outdoor access, with the choice to come back inside as they wish.

🐱🌱 CAN YOU HELP? WE'RE IN NEED OF SOME TOP SOIL!
Some of our lovely cats here at Little Valley are being a little fussy when it comes to their litter trays!

We've tried everything from wood pellets to different types of cat litter, but a few of our feline residents simply aren't keen. So we're hoping that something a little more natural might do the trick!

We're looking for donations of unopened bags of plain, general-purpose top soil to help make their litter trays a little more appealing.

🌱 What we're looking for:

- Plain, clean top soil
- Peat-free
- No manure, fertilisers or other additives
- Unopened bags, please!

If you're visiting a garden centre or DIY shop and could spare a bag or two, we'd be incredibly grateful.

📍 Donations can be dropped off directly at our animal shelter in Exeter.

It's a slightly unusual request, we know, but sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference to the animals in our care! 💜

Brains, beauty AND a Labrador… meet Shadow! 💙🐶

Five-year-old Shadow is a happy, energetic girl who loves learning new things and showing off just how clever she is.

Training is one of her favourite things and she thrives when she gets to use her brain – especially if a game of “find it” is involved! After a good walk, some play and plenty of mental stimulation, she’s equally happy sprawling out on a cosy blanket with her favourite people. 🥰

Shadow is looking for a quieter home with active owners who can continue her training and help her learn that it’s OK to settle and gradually spend some time alone. She can get a little over enthusiastic when meeting other dogs, so she'll need some help learning to greet her canine friends more calmly.

She can’t live with cats, but could potentially live with children of secondary school age.
