Power Of Pads

Power Of Pads We're a small charity with a big impact. We support girls and women in poor areas of Kenya

Girls can miss school when they have their period because of the lack of period products and this means they are disadvantaged educationally, become disempowered and the cycle of poverty continues. We also know that some girls will have s*x with men to get money to buy pads and this places them in danger of early pregnancy, s*xual abuse and child marriage. By providing reusable pads, our experienc

e shows that school absenteeism is reduced, teenage pregnancy is reduced and educational attainment is increased. Women struggle to feed their children and by offering them an opportunity to start their own business they can make an income, provide for their families and help their communities. Our UK based Trustees run the charity and with our partner organisations, we are able to make an impact on girls’ and womens’ health, gender inequality and also support local communities. We can only do this with enormous financial help from our friends and supporters and so we hope you’d like to help us to help these girls and women.
100% of your donation will go towards our work in Western Kenya

On we’re addressing the challenge of equitable access to health services through a sustainable, community-driven approach: training and supporting local women to manufacture high-quality, reusable period pads. These products are then distributed through local schools, ensuring girls can attend classes with dignity and confidence.

Through partnerships with schools POP ensures that distribution networks are locally led and culturally appropriate. Education on menstrual health is also a key component, helping to break stigma and foster open conversations.
100% of any money raised goes straight into funding these small manufacturing businesses. Please give generously via our website powerofpads.com

The initiative delivers multiple impacts;
Improving Health Outcomes: Reusable pads provide a safe and hygienic alternative, reducing the risk of infection and promoting better menstrual health.
Boosting Education Access: Reliable access to sanitary products helps reduce absenteeism among schoolgirls, supporting their right to education.
Empowering Women Economically: Local production initiatives create jobs, skills training, and financial independence for women.
Promoting Sustainability: Reusable pads reduce environmental waste compared to single-use products.

Menstrual health is not just a hygiene issue—it’s a human rights issue - by empowering women with the skills to produce reusable sanitary pads, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also creating economic opportunities and long-term solutions within communities.

What are the barriers for young people accessing education? Of course these vary across the world but can include poverty, health issues and lack of good school provision. Have you ever considered that just being a girl who has started their periods could also restrict access?
In rural Kenya, if girls do not have sanitary protection, perhaps because their parents can’t afford it, they are more likely to miss school and not complete their education. This can put them at risk of early marriage or pregnancy and ultimately limit their life chances.
At Power of Pads we work with local partner organisations who recruit volunteers to make and give out reusable pads to girls in schools. The aim is to improve attendance rates, build girls knowledge of menstruation and give them confidence managing their periods.
Today on the International Day of Education, we celebrate the value of education for all and hope you will consider supporting our projects which help give girls in rural Kenya the chance to thrive in school.

In a changing world, one thing is constant: we’ll always need the toilet. On , it’s a reminder that safe toilets save lives and are a basic human right. However in some of the communities we serve, basic toilet facilities are a non existent luxury. Imagine having your period and you don’t have a toilet to use to change your pads and wash your hands. It’s an unsafe and unhygienic situation that millions of the poorest girls and women are affected by.

Whilst Power Of Pads can enable communities to produce and deliver period pads, we know that often the toilet facilities aren’t there and so menstruation with dignity can be very challenging. Safe toilets can empower girls and improve health and it’s a basic yet vital facility we take for granted.

So no matter how the world alters, some things will never change – our need for toilets is one of them.

“Every girl, everywhere, deserves equality, opportunity and dignity.” On we would like to see a world where no girl or woman is disadvantaged by not having access to period pads.
Power Of Pads supports the equality, opportunity, and dignity of women and girls by working through local Kenyan organisations to provide reusable period pads to girls in rural Kenya. Having these pads means they can keep going to school, get an education and are less likely to be exploited and harmed.

For many girls living in rural Kenya, period products, if available, are too expensive meaning that girls drop out of school during their period or even don’t get to finish their education. This means that they are vulnerable to exploitation, abuse and ill-health.
Rural women are empowered by working with the local organisations learning how to make the reusable pads. Skills that they can use to set up their own businesses.

Keeping girls and women safe, educated and healthy means that they can reach their potential and contribute to their communities on a local, national and international level.

On If you share our vision to ensure that girls are supported to enjoy good menstrual health, please support our work by donating via our website.……………

We’ve helped to provide over 13,600 period pads to 2700 girls over the past few years because of an incredible machine and so we’re celebrating

Dozens of women in rural Kenya use sewing machines, funded by our generous donors, to make thousands of pads that are then given to the most needy girls. But the sewing skills that are learned can be used for other purposes, to make different products and so enabling local women to make a much needed income. Children are fed and can access school and communities can grow and thrive - all because of a sewing machine.

Happy Menstrual Hygiene Day

What does a look like for you?

For us at Power Of Pads it is a world where every school girl in rural Kenya has easy access to products and facilities that allow them to manage their period easily and with dignity. We’d like them to grow up without embarrassment or stigma attached to menstruation. And we want them to be safe in school so they can continue their education, not excluded because they can’t afford period products.

We are fortunate that other organisations in Kenya also have this vision and have joined with us so that we can work together to realise it. Our partners understand their local context and have found women willing to make reusable pads to distribute to girls in local schools for free - women who also want the girls in their communities to grow up managing their periods well. In fact, we are asked to partner with more organisations than we are currently able to work with. The need to do more is always there. Will you join with us to help create a Period Friendly Kenya?

Power Of Pads marks World Health Day 2025 with a Call to Prioritise Women’s Health and Well-being!

In recognition of World Health Day 2025, we at Power Of Pads are proud to reaffirm our commitment to supporting girls and women through improved access to period products and sustainable pad-making projects. One of this year’s World Health Day themes is “Prioritising Women’s Longer-Term Health and Well-being” – this highlights the urgent need to address the barriers that prevent women and girls from living healthy and fulfilling lives.
Millions of girls around the world miss school every month due to a lack of access to period products and proper menstrual health education. Power Of Pads operating in rural Kenya is dedicated to breaking this cycle by providing essential period products to help girls stay in education. We also empower women and communities within Kenya by supporting pad-making projects, creating sustainable solutions that improve both economic independence and health outcomes.
We invite individuals, businesses, and organisations to support this mission by donating, volunteering, or partnering with the charity. Together, we can create a future where no girl or woman is held back by menstruation.

International Women’s Day 2025

Each year gender inequality is highlighted by this annual day but at the current rate of progress it will take approximately 5 generations ie till 2158 to reach gender parity. That is too long, so the theme this year is to accelerate action. At Power of Pads our partners are always trying to reach as many school age girls as possible. Still too many miss one week of school per month because they don’t have access to sanitary protection and so they fall behind in their studies and some inevitably give up the struggle. We and they know that the most effective way to reach any meaningful equality is through education and so keeping girls in school is our prime
motivator. The ramifications of missing school are not just around education it is well documented that these girls are vulnerable to abuse and early marriage and therefore continuing the cycle of poverty. Yet to break this cycle seems simple, provide these girls from struggling backgrounds with reusable sanitary pads.
However, we can’t do this without your help, please dig deep this March 8th and make a donation, however small, to help accelerate action for women and girls equality
