On 13 October, UNISON members will come together in Westminster to tell MPs:

⚖️ Make the wealthiest pay their fair share

We are calling on our members to attend and make their voices heard.

If you are available on 13 October and would like to attend, please email [email protected] to let us know.

🚍 UNISON will arrange and cover the cost of transport and will cover reasonable expenses for members attending.

Please note that UNISON cannot arrange abstraction from duties, so members will need to make their own arrangements regarding their shifts.

The fund allows members on a low income or certain means tested benefits to apply for a £30 voucher to help towards the cost of food.

💬 "I worked through Covid caring for others. Now I'm in pain 24 hours a day because my employer ignored my doctor's advice."

For almost a decade, Rumyanka Spasova worked as a care worker at Oak Farm Clinic Care Home, supporting vulnerable residents, including throughout the Covid pandemic.

After suffering an injury at work, Rumy was advised by her GP to return to light duties while she recovered. But when those adjustments were withdrawn and she was told to resume heavy lifting, the consequences were life changing. ❤️

An Employment Tribunal found her employer had breached its duty to make consistent reasonable adjustments and awarded her significant compensation.

We're proud to have supported Rumy through UNISON Legal Services and helped secure justice in this case.

Representation matters 💪

One of our members recently shared their experience following a successful appeal against progression to Stage 2 of the sickness absence procedure.

“I thought the Stage 2 meetings were there to look after us, so I didn't think UNISON involvement was necessary.
But then I spoke to my UNISON representative and realised it was unfair and I should appeal.”

The outcome?

✅ Both elements of the appeal were upheld.
✅ The decision to progress the member to Stage 2 was reversed.

Sometimes, knowing your rights and having someone alongside you can make all the difference!

As the CQC report is published today, we should all take the time to read it carefully and ask ourselves, does it reflect the organisation we know and feel every day.

Where there is a positive story to tell, we should celebrate it and all the staff who are responsible for it.

But where improvement is needed, it is important that the focus goes beyond what action is planned. Improvement should be something people can see, feel and verify.

This means listening to staff, acting on what they say, and being able to demonstrate that change is making a real difference for our members and the patients they serve.
