On Saturday 20th June, we headed up to Haldon Forest to walk the Discovery Trail.

This beautiful trail follows a level, wide footpath that winds through the conifer trees before emerging onto an open stretch with stunning panoramic views across Exeter and the surrounding countryside. The route then guides you back beneath the treetops, down a gentle slope, and on towards the road crossing, where you once again enjoy the shelter of the trees and pass two more breathtaking viewpoints before returning to the car park.

At just 1.5 miles (2.5km), this trail is suitable for pushchairs, manual wheelchairs, and mobility scooters, making it an accessible option for many people.

As always, the company made the walk even more enjoyable, and we were lucky enough to find a large table afterwards where we could sit together and enjoy some well-earned refreshments.

A wonderful walk, great company, and fantastic views – what more could you ask for?

Join us tomorrow at The Ridge CafΓ©, Haldon, for a 10:30am start as we explore the Discovery Trail.

One of Haldon Forest Park's most popular routes, the Discovery Trail winds through towering conifer trees before emerging onto open paths with expansive views across Exeter and the surrounding countryside.

The trail then guides you back beneath the forest canopy, down gentle slopes and through a mixture of tree species, passing two more stunning viewpoints complete with accessible shelters and seating areas – perfect for taking in the scenery and enjoying a well-earned rest.

The Discovery Trail is wide, fully surfaced and mostly level, making it suitable for a wide range of abilities. The route is suitable for pushchairs, manual wheelchairs and mobility scooters. There are two road crossings along the trail, both featuring wooden chicanes that are wide enough to accommodate pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Whether you're looking to enjoy some fresh air, meet new people or simply appreciate the beautiful surroundings, we'd love to welcome you along.

One of our final walks in May, celebrating both National Walking Month and Westbank's 40th Anniversary, was a tranquil evening stroll from Exeter's historic Quay.

With the sunshine making a welcome appearance, the Quay was exceptionally busy, with people making the most of the beautiful weather and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere along the waterfront.

Our route followed the river towards the Swing Bridge before turning right and heading to The Double Locks for some well-earned refreshments. From there, we returned along the towpath, where the canal was bustling with canoeists, paddleboarders, and groups of friends enjoying the evening sunshine.

It was a wonderful reminder of how accessible walking can be, offering the chance to enjoy great company, beautiful surroundings, and some of the fantastic local routes right on our doorstep.

We have one more anniversary walk currently advertised while we put together our Summer and Autumn programme, so why not join us this Saturday (20th) at 10:30am at The Ridge CafΓ© as we explore the Discovery Trail?

We'd love to see you there!

On occasion, when we don't have a planned walk over the weekend, the team heads off to explore the county in search of suitable ad hoc walks for future outings.

Recently, that took us to Dulverton, a little over the county line πŸ™„, but nevertheless it was a beautiful walk. It was a warm day, and the 3.5-mile loop provided plenty of shade, along with a few perfect paddling spots to cool off along the way.

The route began with a steep climb out of Dulverton on a bridleway. As they say, what goes up must come down, and the effort was soon rewarded with some stunning views and peaceful woodland trails.

Along the route we met several friendly fellow walkers, spending far too much time putting the world to rights and chatting about a certain Sam Culley who at the time was flying around the South West Coast Path in aid of Mountain Rescue! That's all part of the enjoyment though, and it's always nice to meet people who share a love of the outdoors.

The combination of riverside paths, woodland shade, open countryside and welcoming company made this a walk well worth the trip. It's certainly one we'll be adding to our list of potential future group walks.

Have you discovered any hidden gems recently that you'd recommend we go and investigate?

Westbank 40th Anniversary Walk – Dawlish Warren

On Saturday 7th June, we held one of our viewsWestbank Community Health and Care special 40th Anniversary Walks at Dawlish Warren.

Starting from the Outer Warren car park, we followed a circular route along Shutterton Lane to Dawlish Countryside Park. Despite the grey skies, we were treated to some beautiful views across the surrounding landscape. From there, we made our way back via Shutterton Brook, returning to the Outer Warren car park.

After completing the walk, we rewarded ourselves with a well-earned late brunch at Forest Fungi β€” and we certainly weren't disappointed! (Advisable to book).

A great morning of fresh air, good company, and another enjoyable walk celebrating Westbank's 40th anniversary.
