Thank you to everyone who shared such kind messages and memories following our previous announcement. Peter will be greatly missed by many in the pig breeding community.

Pull up a bale and settle in... The BPA now have a podcast!

The Pig Pen is an interview-based podcast celebrating the people who keep British pig farming alive - the breeders, smallholders, show champions, and enthusiasts who have made pigs their life's work.

Each episode, we sit down with a member of the BPA for an honest, unhurried conversation about how they got started, what they've learned, and what keeps them going.

The first episode is live now and features an interview with Stewart Houston, who talked to us about how his childhood interest in keeping rabbits turned into a lifelong passion for pigs.

Let us keep you company for a while and share with you familiar stories of care and determination.

The British Pig Association is the DEFRA approved breed society for the Oxford Sandy and Black Pig (and 13 other breeds).

Only OSB pigs in the BPA herd book are classed as pedigree. There is no other herd book for the breed. Pigs recorded elsewhere do not count towards breed numbers and do not assist in conservation of the breed.

There appears to be some misconception that OSB pigs that are not in the BPA herd book can simply be added in.

THIS IS NOT THE CASE!

There are circumstances where it may be possible but this is on a case by case basis and subject to strict criteria regarding traceability to protect the integrity of the herd book.

If you are buying OSB for breeding please do check that they are in the BPA herd book.

BPA breed reps are Dave Aldous and Jane Mathews and will be happy to assist with enquiries.’
