Supporting communities with practical aid such as clothing, food and medical supplies was an important part of Blythswood’s ministry for nearly 30 years.

Individuals and groups have been impacted for good through the practical support sent from the UK at times of disaster and crisis.

Today, we continue to support people across Europe, Asia and Africa by working with trusted local partners to see lives changed for good and forever.

At a young age, Kelly was fighting for an education and a future

When Kelly started school, her parents split up. Her mother and younger siblings left Harare to escape domestic abuse. Whilst Kelly remained in the city with her father’s family, he moved away and didn't stay in touch, leaving her without support.

She tried to raise money for school fees by working in people’s gardens, but it was not enough. She did not even have enough to eat.

Then she heard about a sewing skills training programme provided by Streams of Hope with support from Blythswood.

“Kelly wasted no time in approaching us,” says Streams of Hope director, Stephen Damuputirai. “She too would like to be able to start her own business and to be able to support her mother and younger sisters.”

Thanks to your support, the sewing skills programme has given Kelly more than skills - it provided her with hope.

This week's prayer theme is: Commitment to Communities

Remember in prayer the communities in Pakistan affected by devastating floods last year. Some lost loved ones, homes, farms, livestock, and all sense of security. Pray that the support given through our partners would bring lasting impact, restoring hope and strength to these communities for years to come.

Meet Elaine!

Elaine was a regular shopper at our Blythswood Deephaven shop and was offered to become a volunteer when Nicole, the manager, noticed she was particularly good at sorting through Christmas baubles.

She then came in for a couple weeks to see if she would like to volunteer and she quickly realised it was something she enjoyed.

Now, a year and a half later, Elaine is a valued member of our volunteer team. From steaming clothes and serving customers on the till to sorting bric-a-brac and supporting our Shoe Box Appeal, she helps with a wide range of tasks that keep the shop running smoothly.

Elaine enjoys meeting new people, doing different tasks and the flexibility of volunteering. She also likes volunteering for a charity as she explains “at the end of the day you’re helping lots of people across the world. It also makes you appreciate what you have.”

Thank you, Elaine, for your dedication, enthusiasm, and the difference you make!

Meet Pete: a volunteer who has spent the last 15 years helping to change lives

Having worked in retail and in recycling, Pete was between jobs in 2011 when a friend suggested volunteering in our Banbridge shop. Fifteen years later, he’s still part of the team, generously giving four days a week to support our work.

From serving customers and sorting donations to moving furniture, Pete is always ready to help in different ways.

Apart from Blythswood, Pete’s interests include rugby (you’ll not find him in the shop on Saturdays) and motorbike racing, sometimes travelling as far afield as Duns in the Scottish borders to marshal at motocross events.

So why does he give so much time as a charity shop volunteer? “It’s an opportunity to mix with other people,” he says. “I really enjoy it. There are four volunteers in the Banbridge shop and I get on with everybody.”

To find out how you can volunteer for Blythswood, email [email protected] or call 01349 830777 (Scotland) or 028 9334 9859 (Northern Ireland).

Built on Prayer

You could say Blythswood has been built on prayer. Prayer was essential to the group going out with gospel tracts on the streets of Glasgow in 1966 and has underpinned every part of the work since then. Give thanks for people who pray faithfully for Blythswood’s work 60 years later.

You can change lives for just £5

At Sargy School, students from low-income areas receive vital educational and nutritional support.

Blythswood's feeding programme gives them energy to learn, to concentrate, and ultimately to take the opportunities an education may bring. Helping them to escape the cycle of poverty.

To give to, go to: blythswood.org/school-meals

Every lesson, every meal, every bit of support makes a difference. Thank you!
