This is what your support makes possible!

Last year, this was still a building site. Now, it’s a brand new block inside one of our boarding houses in Marrakech.

The new space has been designed specifically for university students, with shared dorm rooms, an auditorium, study areas, and a communal kitchen where the girls can make tea and enjoy a little more independence as they move into adulthood.

For girls who may once have faced the prospect of leaving education altogether after primary school, spaces like this are life changing.

It’s incredibly special to see this block now fully finished and being used every day by the girls it was built for - something that simply would not have been possible without you.

Thank you as always for your incredible support - together we can change the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged girls across Morocco. 💚

An inside look at daily life in one of our boarding houses in Marrakech!

Girls arriving back from secondary school and university across Marrakech - swapping stories from the day, heading off to study, helping each other with homework, or taking part in extra-curricular activities.

For many of them, this boarding house is the reason they are still in education at all. Some travel from remote mountain communities where getting to school each day simply wouldn’t be possible.

And the demand keeps growing. We currently have a long waiting list for places from girls wanting the same opportunity to continue their education here.

A safe place to stay is only one part of the picture.

The boarding houses we support are designed to provide a healthy, stable, home-from-home environment where girls can truly thrive while continuing their education.

Nutritious meals, structure, community, support from house mothers, and a calm place to study all play an important role in helping girls stay in school and build independent futures.

For many girls travelling from remote communities in the Atlas Mountains, this support is what makes continuing education possible.

For these two young girls, access to specialist education and tailored support could completely shape the future ahead of them.

In Morocco, opportunities for children with Down syndrome remain extremely limited, particularly for families from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Our work enables girls like these to be given a chance to learn, build confidence, develop life skills and be supported in an environment designed around their needs.

And the impact can be life-changing.

Recently, two young women with Down syndrome supported through the programme secured full-time jobs at luxury hotels in Marrakech.

It is an incredibly inspiring example of how the right support, education and opportunities can lead to independence, confidence and meaningful employment - outcomes that may once have felt completely out of reach.

For many girls living in remote communities in Morocco, access to secondary education simply isn’t possible without somewhere safe to stay.

Schools and universities are often hours away from home, and without secure accommodation, most girls leave education after primary school.

We are proud to help provide safe, stable places for girls to live while continuing their education - giving them the opportunity not only to complete school, but to progress to university degrees and build independent professional careers.

What begins with a safe place to stay can completely transform the direction of a girl’s life. 💚

In our inclusive education programme, recent workshops have focused on developing both practical skills and self-confidence in a supportive, creative environment.

The girls took part in three hands-on sessions - beading, hairstyling and makeup - each designed to encourage creativity, coordination and self-expression. Through these activities, they are not only learning new skills, but also building confidence, independence and a sense of identity.

For young people with Down syndrome, access to structured learning and social development opportunities can be limited. Creating a space where they can explore, learn and engage with others is a key part of supporting their long-term development.

Students from our Rabat programme – supporting girls from marginalised backgrounds living in an orphanage, with a focus on life skills, career readiness and transition – recently took part in a dedicated career orientation day.

Through an immersive visit to the Cirque Shemsy, they experienced a different learning environment, taking part in practical sessions that built discipline, teamwork and confidence.

The day continued with structured guidance from education and career specialists, covering pathways into fields such as engineering, medicine, technology and hospitality, alongside the skills needed to succeed in them.

We are so proud of the ambition that these girls possess. Many of them are aiming for professional careers, and others are beginning to define the direction they wish to go in, beyond education and into independence.

Chris Askew OBE, a Trustee for Education For All Morocco, reflects on why this work matters - and what makes its impact so distinct.

What drew you to EFAM?

“What stood out immediately was the clarity of the model. It addresses very real barriers - geography, poverty, family circumstance - and creates a direct route into education. You can see, quite quickly, how that translates into meaningful change in a girl’s life.”

Why does this work matter right now?

“When you facilitate access to education in the right environment - not just formal learning, but peer support and stability around it - you fundamentally change life chances. It’s a very clear progression from challenge to solution, and then to long-term opportunity.”

What impact has stayed with you?

“Seeing the aftermath of the earthquake was striking - entire communities and education facilities disrupted overnight. But what stood out was the response. Despite limited resources, the focus was on restoring access to education as quickly as possible. That resilience tells you a lot about the importance of what’s being delivered.”

What would you say to someone considering supporting?

“In some organisations, the link between funding and outcome can feel distant. Here, it’s immediate. It’s a simple piece of arithmetic - resources go in, and life-changing impact comes out. It’s tangible, and it’s measurable.”

In parts of rural Morocco, girls can travel up to 70 kilometres a day to reach secondary school.

At that distance, education becomes difficult to sustain and is a primary reason why dropout increases sharply at the transition to secondary school.

Long journeys create:

- Safety concerns
- Time pressures
- Costs that many families cannot absorb

Reducing that distance - through access, proximity, and safe accommodation - is one of the most direct ways to change that outcome, and it's what we've been doing for the past 15 years.

Support our mission to get more girls to stay in education for longer 💚

These sessions don’t look like traditional classrooms. They’re built around movement, repetition, and interaction - because that’s what works for girls with Down syndrome.

Simple exercises - stepping through obstacles, recognising colours and shapes, working in small groups - are helping these girls to develop coordination, focus, and confidence at the same time.

Each girl is supported based on her own pace and ability. Progress isn’t measured against a standardised system - it’s measured individually. Over time, these small, consistent inputs build something much bigger: greater independence, stronger social skills, and the confidence to navigate the world beyond the classroom.

This is what access to the right environment looks like in practice. We support this work by funding and strengthening programmes that provide specialist education for girls who would otherwise be excluded.
