Following on from the Island Project, EEBC were unable to get onto the island to carry out a visual inspection of the tree which may have bats in it, as a result there will need to be a Bat Emergence survey carried out in April/May.

Ewell Court Island Project
The survey on the island has been carried out and the resulting cost to protect the island in its current state will be £50.000. ECHO are in a position to apply for funding for the project, one requirement is that we need EEBC consent, as landowners to submit the application. We are waiting for their response. The grant application has to be submitted by early March 2026

Grotto
The grotto was visited by over 150 children and Adults as part of the library Halloween trial. Great fun to see the children dancing to the Halloween music and collecting their treats.
Main comments were ‘Wow’ we never get to see inside
Luckily the weather held for the volunteers who manned it.
At the time of writing the grotto has been decorated for Remembrance Day and will be followed with Christmas decorations.
NHS Building
Work has been progressing on the NHS building in the park, hopefully it will be up and running soon. Unfortunately, it is still suffering from vandalism, if you do see anything please report to the police.
Ewell Court Park Island
Following the survey of the island on the lake we were offered two options:
1 To retain what remains of the island
2. To restore the lake to its original size.
Due to costs, it was decided to go for option 1.
We have had an offer of a grant to fund the project, but the grant application is time limited so we still have a lot of work to do to move this on, but fingers crossed we will get it done.

Please join our Facebook Group: Ewell Court Park Island to keep track of progress.

Hogsmill Wetlands

ECHO have been asking questions about the failure to get the proposed footpath from Manor Drive to the railway tunnel at Ewell installed, and the blocking off of the stepping stones across the Hogsmill River, it now seems that nothing will be done until early summer 2026. Various agencies are involved in this, hopefully they get it sorted sooner rather than later. There are many comments on The Hogsmill Nature Reserve page

AGM

ECHO Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday 4th December at 1630 in Ewell Court library. We do need your support so if you can attend, please do join us.

I have been asking about the stepping stones at the Hogsmill Nature reserve and have received the following from our MP Helen Maguire after asking her to contact the Environment Agency about the fencing off of the stepping stones.

Dear Helen

Re: Hogsmill Stepping stones

Thank you for your correspondence dated 02 October 2025 regarding the Hogsmill Steppingstones.

I was sorry to read of your constituents concerns regarding the fenced off steppingstones. After liaising with my team, I have been advised that member of the public have also contacted us directly regarding this action so do appreciate the disappointment and frustration that you and your constituents must feel.

We made the decision to install the temporary safety measures in order to protect members of the public from slipping on the submerged stones. As we have identified this slip risk, until a permanent resolution can be found, the temporary measure will need remain in place. We appreciate this will not be the answer your constituents were hoping for and want to assure you this was not a decision we have taken lightly; we consider it a necessary interim measure while we agree on a more permanent solution with the relevant stakeholders.

We do appreciate the significance of the stepping stones for the community and visitors alike and we are keen to locate a group or body who would take responsibility for them. While the stones are not one of our assets, we are actively engaging with the council and have had an initial response from them regarding this issue, and we encourage their continued communication if they have an interest in this asset. Our flood funding is for protecting people and properties from flood risk so we are unable to take ownership of the stones.

We have noted your constituents concerns regarding the gravel build and regretfully, while my team are currently investigating the causes of the submersion, we are not able to comment on whether this has caused significant impact on the stones.

Once our investigations have concluded, I will make sure to update you however should you or your constituents have any further queries or concerns in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me”

I do hope this provides further clarification as to the reasoning behind the stepping stones being fenced off, and the current discussions around ownership.

I will ensure to share any further update from the Environment Agency I receive in due course.

Kind regards,

Helen
