Firstly, thank you to all who supported the fundraiser last night.
I have been asked to relay the background story of how the EGCA and the large field and play area came about and why it is owned and maintained by the villagers and not Epping Forest District Council.
Some 30 odd years ago we (as in Villagers) leased the field from Copped Hall estate for somewhere safe for our children to play - the only area to play was on the little green on the main road.
Basically a young boy went door knocking with a petition asking for a safe area to play, so some villagers at the time, fundraised to get the area and managed to obtain a lease from Copped Hall.
The condition of the lease, amongst other things, is to keep the area maintained and used, otherwise it could be taken back by Copped Hall, (now Land Investments)
Land Investments have already approached the EGCA (Epping Green Community Association) to build houses on it - there was a meeting held in the school hall at the time.
The EGCA have a membership scheme, not only to help towards the upkeep, but also to promote a sense of village ownership for what is now one of the last community assets left in the village.
The £30 annual membership helps to pay the insurance for the area, the playground equipment checks/renewal and helps towards the upkeep of the running track and field. We need to show regular income and keen interest from the village otherwise there is a good chance it will become housing.
It is a misconception that Epping Council maintain it - we as villagers have the responsibility to keep the grass cut, the play equipment safe etc etc - the village has a number of kind hearted, generous people who work tirelessly to try and raise money to continuously cover costs. We are also fortunate in having kind generous people who voluntarily cut the grass, the hedges etc
If you use and appreciate this area, please consider a membership. If you would like regular updates please send us your mobile number for the EGCA WhatsApp Group.
If you remember these early days please share your memories or photos below.
Cheers
