New Project Opens Doors to Inclusive Volunteering in Omagh

Omagh Volunteer Centre has officially launched its new Open Doors to Volunteering project, a new initiative designed to make volunteering more accessible for people who face barriers to getting involved in community life.

The project launch took place at Omagh Volunteer Centre's offices in Anderson House and was attended by the Chair of Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, representatives from local community and voluntary organisations, and individuals interested in becoming volunteers.

Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund Northern Ireland, Open Doors to Volunteering will provide dedicated support to people who may need additional help to begin volunteering. The project aims to support individuals with disabilities, mental health challenges, long-term health conditions, low confidence, social isolation, older people, and others who may benefit from one-to-one guidance.

Through the project, a dedicated Volunteer Support Worker will work closely with both volunteers and local organisations to develop welcoming, inclusive volunteering opportunities that meet individual needs while strengthening the capacity of community organisations across the Omagh area.

The launch event provided an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the project, hear about the benefits of supported volunteering, and discuss how local organisations can work in partnership with Omagh Volunteer Centre to create meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Martin Cassidy, Manager of Omagh Volunteer Centre, said: "Volunteering has the power to change lives, but for many people, taking that first step can feel overwhelming. Open Doors to Volunteering is about removing those barriers and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to their community, regardless of their circumstances.
We know from listening to local people and community organisations that there is both a need and a desire for more supported volunteering opportunities. This project will provide personalised support to volunteers while also helping organisations become more inclusive and confident in welcoming people with additional support needs. We are excited to work alongside local organisations, community groups and volunteers to build a more inclusive volunteering culture across Omagh. Together, we can create opportunities that build confidence, improve wellbeing, reduce isolation and strengthen our communities."

Omagh Volunteer Centre would like to extend its sincere thanks to The National Lottery Community Fund for making the project possible through its generous funding. This investment will enable the organisation to pilot an innovative supported volunteering model, gather valuable learning and evidence, and help shape future volunteering opportunities across the district.

📜 Today we completed the final training course in our Investing in Community Volunteers Programme with Adult Safeguarding Champion and Appointed Persons Training, delivered by Volunteer Now at Fermanagh House

A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in the programme from January to June throughout Fermanagh and Omagh. It has been fantastic to bring together a wide range of local organisations, creating opportunities to learn, share experiences and strengthen volunteering across our communities.

Across the programme, we have shared lots of learning together with a wide range of local organisations, building skills, confidence and connections.

Although this marks the end of this training series, there is more to come. Applications are now open for the Fermanagh Young Leaders Programme and the Diploma in Community Development Practice:

Loneliness Awareness Week is a reminder of how important local connections are - and how community spaces and activities can help reduce loneliness and social isolation in rural areas.

DAERA’s Rural Micro Capital Grant Scheme (RMCGS) 2026/27 is open now, offering £500–£2,500 to eligible rural community and voluntary organisations and Social Economy Enterprises for small-scale capital projects tackling locally identified rural poverty and/or social isolation.
