Arkenstall Centre The Arkenstall Village Centre (AVC) in Station Road, Haddenham near Ely Cambs. It has three rooms av It is a registered charity 300394.

The Arkenstall Village Centre (AVC or just Arkenstall Centre) is located in Station Road, Haddenham, near Ely. It has three rooms available for hire including a large main hall and a stage. It also plays host to the village library access point providing a link to the county’s public library service for Haddenham and surrounding villages. The main business of the Arkenstall Centre is the hiring of facilities for functions e.g. official enquiries, business meetings, parish council meetings, exhibitions, weddings and private parties. The Centre has a well-equipped kitchen. It is the centre of village activities for local groups – art classes, exercise groups, drama groups, concerts and the village pantomime. Hiring rates, together with Standard Terms and Conditions of Hire, offering preferential rates to regular hirers. Hiring fees are reviewed annually. 'Our Village Through Time' is next weekend - Saturday 10 October 2026 from 10am to 4pm at the Arkenstall Centre, Haddenham, Cambs CB6 3XD. Refreshments and FREE parking. So here is a little more history...

Bring on the Romans! Yes, there really were Romans living here in Haddenham more than 1600 years ago! Please welcome Andronicus from Contubernium Romae. Don't worry, he is a very friendly Roman and you won't need to brush up your Latin to chat to him. You can come and meet Andronicus at the 'Our village through time' event in the Arkenstall on Saturday 10 October.

The name 'Haddenham' is derived from the name of the Saxon settlement that was here from around the 6th century. Back in 1990, an early Saxon burial was found in the car park of the Three Kings. For several weeks, archaeologists meticulously dug the site, which revealed a double grave plus remains of other burials. There were also a number of artefacts including a shield boss, spindle whorl, beads and a brooch. More recently, evidence of an early Saxon settlement was found in Chewells Lane, where the new houses have recently been built.

Here is another of the lovely re-enactors who will be taking part in the 'Our village through time' event on Saturday 10 October. Many of you will know her, although maybe not in this guise. Allow me to introduce Aelthryth, who is an early Saxon. This photo was taken at last year's event by SunShy Photography.

We will also have millers at the Centre - Have you ever wondered how flour was produced? Before the advent of windmills, flour would have been ground using querns, but windmills have been in use for many years. There were once many mills in this area, although sadly many have now disappeared.

Wicken mill was built in 1813 and worked for many years before falling into disrepair. The mill has now been restored to working order and is producing excellent flour in the traditional way.

In addition to lots of information about the history of flour production and a fascinating display of photos documenting the restoration of the windmill, they will also have flour for sale produced at the windmill and books about the restoration project.

💕Our Village Haddenham through time - Saturday 10 October 2026 - 10am to 4pm - Arkenstall Centre, Haddenham, Cambs CB6 3XD💕

Did you know that archaeological evidence has shown that there have been people living in this place that we now call Haddenham since the Neolithic period, in fact, probably even earlier than that?

On Saturday 10 October, there will be a special living history event taking place in the Arkenstall Centre to celebrate our rich local history. This year, there will be almost 30 experienced re-enactors will be taking part and demonstrating some of the many skills of our ancestors.

Here is Christie, who will be demonstrating printing techniques used by the Victorians. She will also have some of her lovely prints for sale at the event.
