Six for Six, Ely Air Cadet Appointed Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet for Cambridgeshire

Prestigious honour sees local teenager selected to represent cadets across the county alongside the King's representative.

Cadet Flight Sergeant Logan Constable of 1094 (Ely) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets has been appointed as the Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet for Cambridgeshire following a ceremony held at Coldhams Lane Reserve Forces and Cadets Centre in Cambridge.

The appointment was made by Mrs Julie Spence OBE, His Majesty The King's Lord-Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire and the Sovereign's official representative within the county. The position is widely regarded as one of the highest honours that can be awarded to a cadet and recognises exceptional standards of leadership, commitment, service and personal achievement.

Flight Sergeant Constable's appointment is the culmination of six years of dedication and achievement within the RAF Air Cadets, having joined 1094 (Ely) Squadron at the age of 12. During his cadet career he has embraced a wide range of opportunities, developing his leadership skills and serving as a role model for younger cadets within the unit.

His selection continues an exceptional record for the Squadron, with Logan becoming the sixth cadet from 1094 (Ely) Squadron in the last six years to be appointed as Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet. Given that the appointment is selected from cadets across Cambridgeshire, this remarkable achievement underlines both Logan's individual qualities and the consistently high standards of leadership, service and personal development fostered at Ely Squadron.

As Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet, Flight Sergeant Constable will accompany the Lord-Lieutenant at a variety of civic, military and ceremonial engagements throughout the coming year. These duties may include Remembrance commemorations, Armed Forces Day events, citizenship ceremonies, presentations of honours and awards, Royal visits and other occasions of significance within Cambridgeshire.

Lord-Lieutenant's Cadets act as ambassadors for their cadet organisations and help strengthen links between the Armed Forces, the cadet movement and the wider community.

1094 (Ely) Squadron is one of 28 Squadrons in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Air Training Corps and forms part of the national youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Air Force. Through a varied programme of aviation, leadership, adventure training, fieldcraft, STEM activities and community service, the Squadron helps young people develop confidence, resilience, leadership skills and a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force.

Flight Lieutenant J Donoghue RAFAC, Officer Commanding 1094 (Ely) Squadron, said:
"Logan's appointment as Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet is a tremendous achievement and one that is richly deserved. Throughout his cadet career he has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership, commitment and service to both the Squadron and the wider community. To be selected by the Lord-Lieutenant as her cadet representative for Cambridgeshire is a reflection of the high regard in which he is held and the excellent example he sets to younger cadets."

He added:
"The role of Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet is one of the most prestigious appointments available within the cadet forces. Logan will have the opportunity to represent not only 1094 Squadron and the RAF Air Cadets, but also the young people of Cambridgeshire at some of the county's most significant civic and ceremonial events. We are immensely proud of his achievement. The fact that Logan is the sixth Ely Air Cadet in six years to receive this honour speaks volumes about both his qualities and the calibre of young people coming through our Squadron."

Speaking following the ceremony, Flight Sergeant Constable said:
"I am incredibly honoured to have been appointed as Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet for Cambridgeshire. The RAF Air Cadets has given me opportunities and experiences I could never have imagined, and I am proud to have the chance to represent both my Squadron and the wider cadet movement over the coming year. I am looking forward to supporting the Lord-Lieutenant and taking part in events across the county."

The appointment will see Flight Sergeant Constable join a select group of senior cadets chosen each year from across the cadet forces to serve alongside their county's Lord-Lieutenant, representing the very best of youth achievement, service and citizenship.

Ely Air Cadets Take to the Skies at RAF Cranwell

First-time flyers experience hands-on flying lessons and cutting-edge flight simulation at the home of RAF officer and aircrew training.

Eight cadets from 1094 (Ely) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets enjoyed an unforgettable day at RAF College Cranwell yesterday, where they visited No. 7 Air Experience Flight and took part in a programme designed to inspire the next generation of aviators, engineers and STEM professionals.

For four of the cadets, the visit marked their very first experience of powered flight.

Each cadet flew in the Royal Air Force's Grob Tutor aircraft alongside qualified RAF flying instructors, receiving a hands-on flying lesson that introduced them to the principles of flight and gave them the opportunity to take the controls of the aircraft themselves. Air Experience Flying is one of the RAF Air Cadets' flagship activities and forms part of a progressive aviation training programme designed to introduce young people to flying and aerospace opportunities. Cadets can experience everything from basic aircraft handling and navigation through to aerobatics, flying scholarships and pilot training opportunities. The RAF Air Cadets describes flying as one of the organisation's core activities and a unique opportunity to inspire young people through aviation.

While awaiting their flights, the cadets also had the opportunity to complete an entire virtual sortie in an advanced Virtual Reality flight simulator under the guidance of a serving Royal Air Force Typhoon pilot. The simulator allowed cadets to experience every stage of flight, including aircraft start-up, taxiing, take-off, circuit patterns, aerobatic manoeuvres and landing procedures, providing a realistic insight into military flying operations and decision-making in the cockpit.

The visit highlighted the Royal Air Force's long-standing commitment to inspiring young people to pursue careers in aviation, engineering, technology and other STEM disciplines. The RAF actively promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics as essential skills for the future, recognising that modern air and space power relies on highly skilled personnel across a wide range of technical professions. Through opportunities such as Air Experience Flying, young people gain confidence, problem-solving skills, situational awareness and a deeper understanding of aviation and aerospace careers.

One of the squadron's first-time flyers, who had only become eligible for Air Cadet flying opportunities after passing the minimum age requirement of 13 years and 3 months just a few days earlier, said:

"I was nervous before getting into the aircraft, but as soon as we took off it was incredible. Being able to see the local area from above and actually take control of the aircraft was something I'll never forget. It has definitely made me think more seriously about a future career in aviation."

Flight Lieutenant J Donoghue RAFAC, Officer Commanding 1094 (Ely) Squadron, who accompanied the cadets on the visit, said:

"Flying remains one of the defining experiences of being an RAF Air Cadet. For many young people, this is their first opportunity to sit in the cockpit of an aircraft and experience the challenge and excitement of flight. Days like this help broaden horizons, build confidence and demonstrate to our young people the incredible opportunities available within aviation, aerospace and STEM-related careers. We are extremely grateful to the staff at No. 7 Air Experience Flight for providing such a professional and inspiring experience for our cadets. This was a last minute opportunity to fill 8 spaces when one of our fellow Air Cadet units of the Combined Cadet Force unexpectedly had to withdraw. It was also a great opportunity for our cadets to meet with Wing Commander Nick Gensler the Central & East Region Air Cadets Officer in charge of aviation in our Region who flew 4 of our cadets."

The visit forms part of 1094 (Ely) Squadron's ongoing programme of aviation, adventure training, leadership and STEM activities, which aim to develop young people as confident, capable and responsible citizens while introducing them to the exciting opportunities available through the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. Volunteer Week!
"Hello, I am Flight Sergeant Donoghue from 1094 (Ely) Squadron. I have been at Ely Squadron for 10 years; prior to that, I was a cadet myself, reaching the rank of CWO at 444 Shoreditch Squadron, London Wing.
My time as a cadet, which lasted 7 years, was a fantastic part of my life. I attended cadets five nights a week, and every weekend there was always something going on—we were always busy.
My Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Ron Frewin, encouraged us to aim high, take part in everything, and always do our best. I took part in some amazing events and opportunities—those were some of my best days.
I now volunteer with the Air Cadets to give back and to provide you with the same opportunities I had. I want to help you aim high, achieve your goals, and encourage you to try new activities outside of your comfort zone.
I am now the Eastern Sector SNCO and the Wing DofE Officer. I don’t just encourage my cadets—I’m there for all of you.
I hold all three DofE awards: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. My aim is to get every cadet in the Wing enrolled in the DofE scheme.
The impact I aim to have on cadets is that I work at your level—I join in, have fun, and I am always out and about at Wing events. So please feel free to come and speak to me about anything.

Congratulations to newly promoted Cadet Flight Sergeant Anna Munday who not only received her Flight Sergeant's crowns tonight, but also was awarded her Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant J Donoghue RAFAC said "Anna is a remarkable cadet and a role model for any young person aspiring to be the best they can be."

As well as recently being awarded her Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Anna was one of the top fifty cadet shots at the Bisley Shooting competition and has been awarded her Air Cadet Pilot Scholarship. Once her exams are completed she will be looking forward to beginning her ACPS Solo pilot training on the Viking Gliders.

Anna doesn't just limit herself to excellence in Air Cadet actvities, she also competes at National Competitions in the martial art of Tae Kwon Do.

Alongside Anna's well deserved promotion, the Squadron also presented further classification certificates and first aid badges tonight to some of our cadets and our recruit flight who will soon get the chance to wear their blues uniform for the first time since joining in March this year.
